CHESTERTOWN, Md. – Washington College baseball took on the Alfred State Pioneers in a Sunday double header at Athey Park. Game one went to Alfred State after the Pioneers capitalized on errors by the Shoremen defense to build a 6-0 lead. After Washington scored three in sixth to make it a game, the Pioneers answered to extend the lead and eventually take game one 12-3.Â
In game two, the Shoremen got six strong innings from junior lefty
Izaiah Santiago and a timely three-run homer from
Logan Yi to get a 4-2 lead.
Ashton Mehler then provided three strong innings in relief as the Shoremen took game two 4-3.Â
GAME ONE:Â Washington 3 Alfred State 12
How it happened:
-
Anthony Sofran got the start for Washington and was cruising along until the third inning. The Shoremen racked up errors which allowed Alfred to extend the inning and get a few across the plate. The Pioneers tacked on another in the fourth after an error and then one more in the sixth to make 6-0.Â
-Washington got back into the game with three in the bottom of the sixth.
Erik Risnychok drove in a pair with a triple and then
Logan Yi knocked him in with a grounder to short. Alfred answered with a two-RBI triple of their own in the seventh by Tim Holler. A sac-fly brought him in to make it 9-3.Â
-Nick Serce provided an Alfred exclamation point in the ninth with a three-run blast to right.Â
For the Shoremen
Batting:Â

Noah Iseman finished 2-for-4.
Erik Risnychok finished 1-for-4 with a two-RBI triple and run scored. Â

Chase Ruppel added a double and
Luke Herz added a single in the ninth.
Logan Yi finished with one RBI.

Pitching:Â

Anthony Sofran took the loss working 6.0 innings, giving up six runs (three earned) off nine hits and a pair of walks.Â
For Alfred State
Batting:Â
-Tim Holler finished 4-for-6 with four runs and a pair of RBIs. Nick Serce finished 2-for-4 with five RBIs, a walk and run scored.Â
Pitching:Â
Ryan Bailey took the win working 5.1 innings surrendering three earned runs off two hits and three walks.Â
GAME TWO:Â Washington 4 Alfred State 3
How it happened
-Izaiah Santiago got the start in game two for the Shoremen. The lefty was unlucky to go down in the first as a fly ball by Alfred leadoff Tim Holler landed in no-man's land for a double. The Pioneers then bunted in back-to-back at-bats to bring Holler in for a 1-0 lead. Alfred added another in the second before the Shoremen scored via balk to make it 2-1 after three innings.

-Washington took their first lead of the day when
Logan Yi hit a three-run homer to right. Yi's second blast of the year made it 4-2 heading into the sixth inning. Santiago worked a clean sixth before turning it over to
Ashton Mehler out of the pen.Â

-Mehler worked around a lead-off single to post a zero for the seventh and set down the Pioneers in order for the eighth. Alfred got a run back in the ninth and held a threat until the last at-bat. With two down and two on, Mehler forced a pop-up to short that ended the game.Â
