CHESTERTOWN, Md. – Senior catcher
Lexie Witmer (Drexel Hill, Pa./Upper Darby) became the 27th player in the history of Washington College softball team to tally 100 career hits with a single in the first game as host Washington College split a non-conference softball doubleheader with visiting Mary Washington on Sunday afternoon at Washington College Softball Field. The Shorewomen topped the Eagles in game one, 6-1, before Mary Washington responded with a 4-3 win in game two. The Shorewomen are now 8-11 on the season, while the Eagles are 13-7.
Washington College 6 Mary Washington 1 (Game 1)
How It Happened
- Mary Washington broke onto the scoreboard in the top of the fourth inning when with one out,
Hailee Danneker scored on a fielding error off the bat of
Kennedy Darling to give the Eagles a 1-0 lead as Darling got an RBI on the play. WC was able to escape further damage as pitcher
Brynn Balliet caught a line drive off the bat of
Aminah Shakir and doubled off Darling at first.
- The Shorewomen answered with two in the bottom of the fourth. With one out, Witmer singled to right field for her milestone hit and second of the game and would be pulled for pinch runner
Lilly Cook. With two outs,
Gracelyn Goforth doubled to right to score both Cook and
Lexi Barnhart to make it 2-1.
- In the bottom of the sixth, the hosts broke the game open with four unearned runs to cap the scoring. Barnhart singled to right to plate
Hannah Solge to push the lead to 3-1 with nobody away. Witmer would score on a fielding error to push the advantage to 4-1. After two outs were recorded,
Maddy Kendall capped the frame with a two-run single to right to chase in
Jules Weglarz and Barnhart to give the hosts a five-run cushion.
For The Shorewomen (8-10)
- Hitting: Barnhart (2-for-3, two runs), Witmer (2-for-3), Goforth and Kendall (two RBI)
- Pitching: Balliet (win 5-2, complete game, seven hits, one run, one earned, four walks, two strikeouts)
- Washington committed two errors in game one, leading to zero Mary Washington runs.
- The Shorewomen had seven hits and drew zero walks in the game, while leaving three on base.
For Mary Washington (12-7)
- Hitting:
Rayna Lloyd (2-for-2, walk),
Emma Schieda (2-for-4)
- Pitching:
Caitlyn Burch (loss 8-2, seven hits, six runs, two earned, zero walks, four strikeouts)
- Mary Washington had two errors in the opener, leading to four unearned runs.
- The Eagles had seven hits and drew four walks, while stranding nine on base.

- The most recent player to join the 100-hit club for Washington College was
Alyssa Vieira who reached it against Neumann on March 30, 2022.

How It Happened
- A one-out sacrifice fly by
Bridget Laychak plated Shakir for the first run of the game in the top half of the first inning.
- The lead was short lived as in bottom of the first, Witmer plated Vieira on a one-out base hit to center to tie it at 1-1.
- Mary Washington retook the lead in the top of the second, 2-1, when Shakir notched a base hit to left-center to score
Erica Shoop.
- The Shorewomen would level it at 2-2 as Weglarz led off the last of the third with a home run to right.
- In the top of the fifth, with runners on first and third,
Abby Fielder stole second and the throw hit her and bounced into shallow left-center allowing Schieda to score from third to give the guests a 3-2 lead with one out.

Chloe Trefz would chase in Goforth on a single to right with two away to even the game 3-3 in the home half of the fifth.
- The Eagles would score what proved to be the winning run with one away in the top of the sixth as
Brigid Ward scored on a fielding miscue to the put the guests ahead 4-3.
- In the last of the seventh, Washington College had runners on first and second with one out, but Mary Washington pitcher
Samantha Stuart got Trefz to pop out to second and Kendall to fly out to Ward in right-center to end the game and earn the split for the visitors.
For The Shorewomen (8-11)
- Hitting:
Jenna Harper (2-for-4), Weglarz (home run)
- Pitching:
Gen Kozub (loss 2-4, complete game, nine hits, four runs, two unearned, two walks, four strikeouts)
- The Shorewomen had eight hits in the game, drew three walks and had two players get on by a hit by pitch as they left 11 on base.
- WC had four errors in the field, leading to two unearned runs.
For Mary Washington (13-7)
- Hitting: Shakir (3-for-4, run, RBI), Schieda (2-for-4)
- Pitching: Stuart (win 2-3, complete game, eight hits, three runs, three earned, three walks, five strikeouts)
- The Eagles had nine hits, worked out two walks and had one get on via hit by pitch as they left 11 on base.
- Mary Washington committed two errors in the field, leading to zero unearned runs.

- Weglarz was named Goose Nation TV Shorewoman Player of the Game during the broadcast.
- Witmer finished today with three hits in the twinbill and has 101 all-time hits, tied for 26th all-time with
Leah Stokes '20.
- Today was the first ever meeting between the Eagles and Shorewomen in softball.
