WESTMINSTER, Md. – Visiting Washington College notched its first ever road sweep of host McDaniel in a Centennial Conference softball doubleheader on Tuesday afternoon. The Shorewomen took game one in five innings, 19-6, and took advantage of a second inning miscue by the Green Terror to take a 1-0 victory in game two. The Shorewomen are now 14-14-1 on the season and 6-1-1 in the conference, while the Green Terror drops to 7-17 and 1-7 respectively.
Washington College 19 McDaniel 6 (Game 1 – Five Innings)
How It Happened
- Washington scored four times in the top of the first inning to take the lead, 4-0, in a game it would never trail in. With one out,
Lexie Witmer singled to center to score
Hannah Solge for the first run of the contest. The Shorewomen would score three times with two outs as
Gracelyn Goforth singled to left-center to plate
Jenna Harper to make it 2-0 and
Chloe Trefz capped the scoring with a two-run double to left-center to chase in Goforth and Witmer.
- The Green Terror got two back in the last of the first inning to cut the lead to 4-2 taking advantage of two errors by the Shorewomen.
Makayla Calamita plated Bella Sylvester on a double to right-center with one away for the first run and the second run happened when Calamita scored on a fielding error with two outs to trim it to two.
- In the top of the second, the Shorewomen scored seven times to take command of the contest with all the runs coming after two away. Harper doubled to right to score
Alyssa Vieira to make it 5-2 and two hitters later
Lexi Barnhart doubled down the left field line to drive in Harper and Witmer to give the guests a five-run lead. Balliet singled through the left side to extend the lead to six that plated Barnhart and
Jules Weglarz finished off the outburst with a bases clearing double to right-center that drove in Gorforth, Trefz and Balliet to give WC an 11-2 advantage.
- The Shorewomen added four more runs in the top of the third to lead 15-2.
- Both teams scored twice in the fourth and fifth innings as the game was called after five due to the eight-run rule.
For The Shorewomen (13-14-1, 5-1-1 CC)

- Washington committed three errors in game one, leading to two unearned runs.
- The Shorewomen had 18 hits, drew eight walks in the game and had one reach on hit by pitch, while leaving eight on base.
For McDaniel (7-16, 1-6 CC)

- Pitching:
Hannah Costa (loss 0-1, three innings, eight hits, 10 runs, eight earned, five walks, three strikeouts)
- McDaniel committed one error in the opener, leading to two unearned runs.
- The Green Terror had 10 hits and worked out two walks, while stranding nine on base.
Notes
- The 19 runs are the most by the Shorewomen against the Green Terror in a game. The previous high was 15 in a 15-13 win in 1997.
- Witmer's prior career best in RBI was three, which she did on two occasions.
Washington College 1 McDaniel 0 (Game 2)
How It Happened
- The Shorewomen took advantage of the McDaniel fielding error in the top of the second inning for the lone run of the game with two outs a Trefz scored on the fielding miscue after she had hit a triple to right after the first two were retired.
- WC got a runner to third with top of the third and fifth, but failed to tack on.
- McDaniel had runners on second and third with two outs in the last of the fifth, but were left stranded.
- In the last of the seventh, the Green Terror had runners on second and third with two away with
Evie Craig at the plate looking to tie or win the game for McDaniel. However, Barnhart got Craig to fly out to Weglarz in left to end the game and twinbill.
For The Shorewomen (14-14-1, 6-1-1 CC)
- Hitting: Trefz (2-for-3, run), Solge (2-for-3)
- Pitching: Barnhart (win 4-3, complete game shutout, six hits, four walks, four strikeouts),
- The Shorewomen had eight hits in the game and drew zero walks as they left eight on base.
- WC had one error in the field.
For McDaniel (7-17, 1-7 CC)
- Hitting:
Katy Newton (3-for-3), Sylvester (two walks)
- Pitching:
Parker Murphy (loss 5-7, complete game, eight hits, one unearned run, zero walks, zero strikeouts)
- The Green Terror had six hits and worked out four walks as it left 10 on base.
- McDaniel committed one errors in the field, leading to one unearned run.
Notes
- Washington had previously swept McDaniel three times prior to today in 2006, 2008 and 2011, but all three were at home.
- Barnhart totaled her fourth career shutout in the win.
