CHESTERTOWN, Md. – Host Washington College was all gas during the Sunday afternoon Centennial Conference doubleheader against visiting Swarthmore at Washington College Softball Field. The Shorewomen got by the Garnet on a walk-off double in the opening 5-4 win, following it up with a pretty display of hitting in the second game to come out on top 6-4 over the visitors. The Shorewomen are now 16-14-1 overall and 8-1-1 in Centennial play, while the Garnet fall to 15-13 overall and 3-5 in conference play.
Washington College 5 Swarthmore 4 (Game 1)
How It Happened
- Washington opened the bottom half of the first inning emphatically as
Jenna Harper took the first pitch she saw to dead center for a solo home run with one out in the inning to get the Shorewomen ahead 1-0 early in the contest.
- The Shorewomen extended their lead in the third inning as a result of capitalizing on having the bases loaded.
Lexie Witmer was first hit by pitch to score
Jules Weglarz, followed up by
Lexi Barnhart hitting a sacrifice fly to center field to score
Alyssa Viera. The last run of the inning for the Shorewomen was scored when
Chloe Trefz singled to right field to score
Maddy Kendall, who had come in to pinch run for Witmer, giving Washington a 4-0 lead.
- Swarthmore got on the board for the first time in the fourth inning when
Grace Taylor hit a sacrifice fly to left center field to score
Emily Bertrand.
- A huge sixth inning by the Garnet saw them tie the contest at four runs apiece. It started with
Alex Simon hitting a sacrifice fly to center field to score Bertrand, followed up by a double by
Taylor that plated
Kate Hart, with the scoring concluding with Taylor coming home after a
Brooke Coneeny single.
- Washington did not let the sixth inning push by Swarthmore rattle them as they put together a rally to end the game. After two flyouts to start the home half of the seventh,
Gracelyn Goforth was hit by pitch and
Hannah Solge pinch ran for her. Trefz was walked on the next at bat, setting up runners at first and second with two gone in the inning.
Lilly Cook stepped up to the plate and with a 1-0 count crushed a walk-off double to right field as Solge came across the plate for the winning run in game one.
For The Shorewomen (15-14-1, 7-1-1 CC)
- Hitting: Harper (3-4, run, RBI, HR), Witmer (1-3, RBI), Trefz (2-2, RBI, BB), Cook (2-4, RBI), Barnhart (0-3, RBI)
- Pitching:
Brynn Balliet (win 9-4, complete game, seven hits, four runs, three earned runs, three strikeouts, two hit batters)
- Washington committed one error.
- Shorewomen recorded 13 hits, drew one walk, and left five runners on base.
For Swarthmore (15-12, 3-4 CC)
- Hitting: Taylor (1-2, run, two RBI), Coneeny (1-1, RBI), Simon (0-2, RBI)
- Pitching:

Washington College 6 Swarthmore 4 (Game 2)
How It Happened
- The Garnet took full advantage of the opportunity and opened scoring up for game 2 in the second inning when Simon hit an RBI single down the left field line, scoring Coneeny on the play.
- Simon then extended the lead for Swarthmore in the fourth inning with a two-run blast to center field that scored
Avery McClure as well.
- Washington got on the board in the home half of the same inning as with bases loaded, Cook walked to score Harper.
- In the next inning the Shorewomen put together some excellent plays to take the lead. Harper singled through the right side to score Weglarz to make the contest 3-2. Witmer followed it up with a sacrifice fly to left field to score Viera to tie the contest at three.
Gen Kozub then gave herself some breathing room in the circle with a single through the right side to score Solge.
- The sixth inning saw the Shorewomen pick up where they left off as Weglarz scored on a wild pitch to give Washington a 5-3 lead. Harper would later hit a sacrifice fly to left center field to score Viera to score the final run for the Shorewomen, giving them a 6-3 lead.
- Swarthmore made a valiant effort to come back, scoring one in the top of the seventh as Hart scored to make it 6-4 following Simon's groundout to third base.
For the Shorewomen (16-14-1, 8-1-1 CC)
- Hitting: Harper (1-3, run, two RBI), Kozub (1-1, RBI), Witmer (0-3, RBI), Cook (0-2, RBI, BB)
