CHESTERTOWN, Md. – Host Washington College captured a pair of one-run wins over visiting Muhlenberg on Saturday afternoon in a Centennial Conference softball doubleheader at Washington College Softball Field. The Shorewomen edged the Mules 1-0 in the opener and held off the guests in the second game, 3-2. The Shorewomen are now 12-14-1 overall and 4-1-1 in the conference, while the Mules drop to 12-12 and 3-3 respectively.
Washington College 1 Muhlenberg 0 (Game 1)
How It Happened
- Washington would get the lone run of the game in the bottom of the third inning courtesy of a pair of Muhlenberg errors. Following a fly out by
Hannah Solge for the second out, the throw back to the infield got away and
Jules Weglarz took third. After the ball was fielded, the throw to try to nail Weglarz at third was overthrown and Weglarz came around to score for the lone run of the contest.
- The Mules almost tied it with two outs in the top of the fifth as
Kaya Mahy hit a fly ball to deep left-center, buy
Alyssa Vieira was able to track it down just in front of the fence for the third out.
- Muhlenberg would only get one runner on base the rest of the game, a one-out hit by pitch to
Maddy Svenningsen in the top of the sixth. Svenningsen would reach second on a one out sacrifice bunt by
Gillian Zack. The next hitter,
Katelyn Buurman hit a ground ball up the middle that WC pitcher
Brynn Balliet was able to slow down with her glove and it allowed shortstop
Chloe Trefz to field it and throw out Buurman at first to protect the lead.
- Balliet retired the Mules in order in the top of the seventh, getting
Sara Fallon to fly out to center to end the game.
For The Shorewomen (11-14-1, 3-1-1 CC)
- Hitting: Weglarz (1-for-2, run)
- Pitching: Balliet (win 7-4, complete game shutout, two hits, one walk, one strikeout)
- Washington committed zero errors in game one.
- The Shorewomen had three hits and drew zero walks in the game, while leaving two on base.
For Muhlenberg (12-11, 3-2 CC)
- Hitting: Svenningsen (1-for-2, reached on a hit by pitch)
- Pitching:
Raya Kunes (loss 5-5, 11 hits, eight runs, seven earned, one walks, five strikeouts)
- Muhlenberg had three errors in the opener, leading to one unearned run.
- The Mules had two hits, drew zero walks and had one get via hit by pitch, while stranding four on base.

- Balliet was named the Goose Nation TV Shorewoman Player of the Game.
Washington College 3 Muhlenberg 2 (Game 2)
How It Happened
- In the top of the first,
Sophia Cicchetti took third on a wild pitch and came around to score on a throwing error to give the Mules a 1-0 lead with one away.
- The Shorewomen would take the lead for good on a two-out triple by Vieira with two away in the bottom of the second that just eluded Zack in centerfield that scored both
Gracelyn Goforth and Trefz to make it 2-1.
- WC would push its lead to 3-1 with a two-out infield single to second in the bottom of the third by Trefz that plated
Lilly Cook.
- The score would remain 3-1 until the top of the seventh when Svenningsen led off the frame with a home run to center to trim the lead to 3-2. However, WC pitcher
Lexi Barnhart would retire the next three Muhlenberg hitters including a comebacker by
Scooter Hulsen for the final out of the contest to finish off the sweep.
For The Shorewomen (12-14-1, 4-1-1 CC)
- Hitting: Trefz (2-for-3, run, RBI), Vieira (2-for-4, two RBI),
Lexie Witmer (three walks)
- Pitching: Barnhart (win 3-3, complete game, eight hits, two runs, two earned, four walks, four strikeouts)
- The Shorewomen had seven hits in the game and drew four walks as they left six on base.
- WC had one error in the field, leading to zero unearned runs.
For Muhlenberg (12-12, 3-3 CC)
- Hitting: Svenningsen (1-for-2, home run, RBI, walk),
Sabrina Reichelt (2-for-2), Cicchetti (1-for-3, run, walk)
- Pitching:
Justine Bergara (loss 3-5, complete game, seven hits, three runs, three earned, four walks, four strikeouts)
- The Mules had eight hits and worked out four walks as they left nine on base.
- Muhlenberg committed zero errors in the field.
