Shorewomen Prevail in Team’s First-Ever Shootout Win to Edge Green Terror, 2-1

Watkinson Scores Lone Goal in Shootout; Balliet Forces OT with 11th Hour Goal

WESTMINSTER, Md. – Visiting Washington College won its first-ever game that required a shootout to determine the winner as freshman defender/midfielder Natalie Watkinson (Princess Anne, Md./Washington) scored the only goal in the bottom of the second round in a 2-1 win over host McDaniel in a Centennial Conference field hockey game on Wednesday night at Gill Stadium.  The Shorewomen improve to 5-4 overall and 1-1 in the Centennial, while the Green Terror drop to 2-6 and 0-2 respectively.

Washington College 2 McDaniel 1 (Shootout - 1-0 WC)

How It Happened
- McDaniel was awarded a penalty stroke with 4:09 left in the first quarter and Tori McArthur placed her shot into the lower right corner for the lone goal of the opening 15 minutes.
- In the second quarter, the Shorewomen had all four shots and penalty corners, but could not find the tying score as the Green Terror took a 1-0 lead into halftime break.
- Washington's MaryCate Anson had the team's lone shot of the third with 25 seconds to go off of a penalty corner, but her attempt was wide left.
- The Shorewomen got the equalizer with 53 seconds in the fourth quarter left as Anson's pass from outside the circle found the stick of Brynn Balliet and from about eight yards out, Balliet deposited the shot into the lower right corner to tie it at 1-1 and force overtime.  WC held a 5-1 advantage in shots in the fourth.
- In the first overtime session, Washington had all four shots, including two on target, but could not get the winner.  The last chance came with 1:03 left on an Anson try, but it was blocked by a McDaniel defender.
- McDaniel's only shot of either extra period came with 5:10 to go in the second overtime by Yeseniah Ortiz, but it was saved by Washington goalie Charlotte Schurman.
- Watkinson had the last shot of the second overtime with 1:18 left, but it was turned away by Lora Scarangello as the game would go to a shootout.
- In the shootout, Watkinson had the only goal as she got around Scarangello and scored from the right side of the circle in the last of the second.
- Ortiz had the final chance for the Green Terror in the top of the fifth, but Schurman kicked the ball away and time expired to give Washington the win.
- WC gets a team goal for winning the shootout.
