Shorewomen Shock #24 Garnet on Anson’s Winner, 4-3

Esposito Becomes Third Player in Team History to Reach 100 Career Points

SWARTHMORE, Pa. – Senior forward Kat Esposito (Severna Park, Md./Severna Park) became the third player in the history of the Washington College Field Hockey program to tally 100 career points on a second quarter goal, but it was junior midfielder MaryCate Anson (Newark, Del./Newark Charter) netting the game-winning score with 3:19 to go in the fourth quarter to break a 3-3 tie in a 4-3 victory over host #24 Swarthmore win in a Centennial Conference field hockey game on Wednesday afternoon at Clothier Field.  The Shorewomen are now 10-7 on the season and 5-4 in the Centennial, while Garnet fall to 11-7 and 7-2 respectively.

How It Happened
- Swarthmore was award a penalty stroke 62 second into the game, but Washington goal Charlotte Schurman was able to stop the stroke.
- Just over two minutes later, Samantha McMahon put the Shorewomen ahead 1-0 on an unassisted goal from about 10 yards out 3:09 into the first quarter.  Netting the assist on the score was Anson.
- Swarthmore would level the game with 4:39 to go in the opening quarter on a pass into the circle and a reverse shot from about six yards out to the inside of the left post.
- Esposito tallied her milestone point on a goal from the center of the circle off of a feed from Kendal Thomson off of a penalty corner as Esposito was able to elude one defender to find the open area for the shot
- The Garnet would level the game with 5:54 to go in the third on a redirection from about eight yards out that snuck inside the left and it would be 2-2 after three. 
- In the fourth quarter, Emma Campbell put the Shorewomen back ahead 3-2 with 7:21 left on an assist from McMahon on a deflection from about eight yards out off of McMahon blast from the top of the left circle that started off of a penalty corner.
- Swarthmore would level the game with 4:26 to go in the fourth on a shot from the right side from eight yards out that found the inside of the right post.
- Tied at 3-3, the Shorewomen got a penalty corner and Anson's initial shot was stopped for a defensive save, but two seconds later Anson followed up her own shot and batted that shot into the cage to put Washington ahead 4-3 just 67 seconds after Swarthmore tied it.
- Anson's goal proved to be the last shot of the game as WC did not allow Swarthmore a chance to tie it up.

- Goalkeeper: Schurman (8 saves, 3 goals allowed, 60:00)
- Washington had 12 shots and 11 penalty corners in the contest.
- Esposito joins Laura Scimeca '05 and Christyl Arrabal '00 as the only three players in the history of the program to tally 100 career points.  Scimeca notched 131 career points on 58 goals and 15 assists and is the team's all-time leader in goals and points.  Arrabal chalked up 117 points on 43 scores and 31 helpers and is the program's top career assist leader.  Esposito got to her 100 career points on 46 goals and eight assists, currently ranking second all-time in WC history in goals.
