Shorewomen Send Bears to Hibernation Late to Secure 10th Win

Pluta Nabs Season-High 14 Rebounds

CHESTERTOWN, Md.– The Washington College Shorewomen defeated the Ursinus College Bears in a 59-53 Centennial Conference women's basketball contest on Saturday afternoon inside Penny J. Fall Gym. The Shorewomen outscored Ursinus in the first half, 38-24, and survived a Bears second half rally with a 14-12 fourth period.  The Shorewomen improve to 10-10 overall and 7-8 in the Centennial, while the Bears drop to 12-9 and 8-8 respectively.

How It Happened
- WC got things started with a jump shot from Abby Meredith 21 seconds into the game.
- The Bears would score five unanswered points to take their only lead of the game at 5-3 on a Sarah DiLello three-pointer with 7:41 to go in the opening quarter. Their lead lasted 13 seconds as Emma Robinson tied it at 5-5 on a layup.
- Kaleigh White put Washington ahead for the rest of the game on a three-pointer with 1:40 left in the first, 19-16.  The Shorewomen led 21-18 after one.
- WC outscored the Bears 17-6 in the second quarter to lead 38-24 at the half.
- The Bears outscored the Shorewomen 17-7 in the third to cut the lead to 45-41 after three quarter with Natalie Mehl netting two from the line with nine seconds left to trim it to four.
- In the fourth after Chinwe Irondi made two foul shots to cut the lead to 45-43 with 8:06 left, Washington got the next five points to lead 50-43 with 6:02 left on a Peyton Berger jumper.
- After an Irondi lay-in with 2:12 remaining in the fourth cut the lead to 55-53, WC's Karry Kelliher added the final four points of the game to secure the win.
 
For The Shorewomen (10-10, 7-8 CC)
- Kelliher (tied team-high of 14 points, tied squad-best four assists, two blocks), Serena Pluta (tied team-high 14 points, season-best and game-topping 14 rebounds), Meredith (four assists to tie for tops on team).
- The Shorewomen, who held a 48-33 edge in rebounds, shot 23-55 (41.8%) overall, 3-6 (50%) from three, and 10-19 (52.6%) on free throws.
- WC outscored the Bears in the paint, 28-14, second chance points, 13-7, and points off the bench, 10-6, while committing 23 turnovers.
 
For Ursinus (12-9, 8-8 CC)
- Sarah Dilello (team-high and game-best 20 points and six rebounds), Mehl (16 points), Irondi (11 points and team-high eight rebounds).
- The Bears went 18-for-64 (28.1%) from the floor, 9-for-27 (33.3%) from the arc, and 8-for-16 (50%) from the line.
- Ursinus outscored the Shorewomen in points off turnovers 14-6.
- The visitors coughed up the ball 12 times.
 
Notes
- Kelliher was named the Goose Nation Shorewoman TV Player of the Game in the broadcast.
- Ursinus won the first matchup of the season with the same final score of 59-53.
- The Bears entered the afternoon ranked fourth in the Centennial Conference, while the Shorewomen were in possession of the sixth and final playoff spot.
- Pluta has totaled three double-doubles in her last four outings.
- The team has reached double digits in wins for the fourth straight season for the second time in team history.  The 1999-2000 through 2002-03 squads reached double figures in victories four consecutive times.
