Softball Falls Short To Lynchburg

LYNCHBURG, Va. – Visiting Washington College fell short in both games of the doubleheader against host Lynchburg Saturday afternoon. The Hornets took game one 7-0 and game two 9-1 in six innings due to the eight-run rule.

How It Happened
  • Lynchburg grasped the lead early, getting two unearned runs in during the bottom of the first thanks to a homerun from Lynchburg's Alyssa Talayumptewa. 
  • Washington was left hitless until Lexi Barnhart singled to center field early in the second inning. The Shorewomen added two more hits as the first batters of the fourth and fifth inning, Julia Weglarz and Gracelyn Goforth, singled. 
  • Jessica Strickland had the second homerun of the game for the Hornets, moving the score to 3-0 in the bottom of the fourth and a pair of doubles from the Hornets put them up 5-0 at the end of the fifth. 
  • The Hornets were able to tally two more runs, one off a Washington error, to extend their lead and claim the first game, 7-0. 

For The Shorewomen (2-2-1)
  • Hitting:  Sydney Skrzypiec (1 for 3, double) 
  • Pitching: Lexi Barnhart ( loss 1-1, 5 innings pitched, 4 strikeouts), Gen Gozub ( 1 inning pitched)

For The Hornets (3-0)
  • Hitting: Jessica Strickland ( 2 for 2, 1 home run, 1 RBI) , Haley Martin ( 2 for 3, 1 double, 1 RBI), Alyssa Talayumptewa ( 1 for 4, 1 home run, 2 RBI)
  • Pitching: Kailey Dorcsis ( win 2-0, 6 innings pitched, 9 strikeouts), Logan Curtis ( 1 inning pitched, 2 strikeouts)

How It Happened
  • Nevaeh Unzueta had the first hit of the game, singling straight up the middle. 
  • The Hornets came out and answered with three runs scored in the bottom of the first inning. 
  • A Hannah Solge single to the pitcher set up the first run scored for the Shorewomen. Solge was batted in by Barnhart as she singled to right field, lessening the lead to 6-1. 
  • Lynchburg's Talayumptewa singled once more in the fourth to extend their lead to 7-1. The Hornets scored twice more to end the game 9-1. 

For The Shorewomen (2-3-1)
  • Hitting: Solge (2 for 3), Barnhart (1 for 2, 1 RBI)
  • Pitching: Brynn Balliet (loss 1-1, 3.1 inning pitched, 1 strikeout), Emmie Meeks ( 2 innings pitched)

For The Hornets (4-0)
  • Hitting: Martin (3 for 3, 1 RBI), Talayumptewa ( 3 for 4, 3 RBIs)
  • Pitching: Emmie Charlton (win 1-0, 5 innings pitched, 2 strikeouts)
Notes
The last time these two teams met was in 2021 at the Salisbury Softball Tournament. Washington College held Lynchburg to three runs with Lexi Barnhart pitching and collected a win 4-3.
