CHESTERTOWN, Md. – Host Washington College and visiting New York University split a non-conference doubleheader on Thursday afternoon at the Washington College Softball Field. The Shorewomen won game one in nine innings, 2-1, before the Violets held on for a 6-4 victory in game two. The Shorewomen are 9-10-1 overall, while the Violets are 5-7.
Washington College 2 New York University 1 (Game 1 – 9 Innings)
How It Happened
- Washington got runners at third in the bottom of the first and fourth innings, but could not score. The closest NYU got to a run in regulation was a runner to second in the sixth, but could not score.
- In the top of the eighth with a runner placed at second base, the Violets got the first run of the game as
Monique Kamrowski scored on a sacrifice fly by
Margaux Lesser with one out.
- Down to their last out in the last of the eighth, the Shorewomen tied it on a base hit to second base by
Hannah Solge that scored
Julia Guzman.
- NYU failed to score in the top of the ninth before WC would score on a one-out single down the left field line by
Julia Weglarz the drove in Solge.
For The Shorewomen (9-9-1)
- Hitting: Solge (3-for-4, run, RBI), Weglarz (2-for-4, RBI)
- Pitching:
Lexi Barnhart (win 3-5, complete game, three hits, one unearned run, one walk, zero strikeouts)
- Washington committed one error in game one, but did not lead to a NYU run.
- The Shorewomen had six hits and did not draw a walk as they left four on base.
For New York University (4-7)
- Hitting: Lesser (1-for-3, RBI)
- Pitching:
Karleigh Kluever (complete game, six hits, two runs, zero earned, zero walks, five strikeouts)
- NYU had no errors in the opener.
- The Violets had three hits and worked out a walk, while stranding six on base.
Notes
- Weglarz was named the Goose Nation TV Shorewoman Player of the Game.
- It was WC's first extra inning game of the season.
New York University 6 Washington College 4 (Game 2)
How It Happened

Chloe Stone gave NYU a 2-0 lead with an opposite field home run to right-center in the top of the first that also scored
Lizzy Smith.

Madi Hand gave the Violets a 3-0 advantage on a one-out homer to left-center that hit the top of the fence and dropped over.
- The Shorewomen got two in the bottom of the fifth after there were two outs and nobody on.
Gracelyn Goforth singled up the middle to score
Lilly Cook and
Lilly Wenzel doubled to right-center to drive in
Mia Mavoides and the lead was a single run, 3-2.
- The Violets responded with three in the top of the sixth to take a 6-2 lead. Smith would score on a one out RBI groundout off the bat of Victoria Negron to make it 4-2. Emily Stone would score on a wild pitch to push the lead to three with two away and Caroline Hofmann singled up the middle to chase in Hand and give NYU a four-run cushion.
- Washington would make a final push in the last of the seventh with two runs and had the winning run on base before the rally fell short. Wenzel would score on a throwing error with one out to cut the lead to 6-3 and
Maddy Kendall came home on an error and it was a two-run game with one away. NYU would get a fielder's choice with the runner thrown out at the plate and a pop out to secure the win.
For The Shorewomen (9-10-1)
- Hitting: Wenzel (2-for-3, run, walk, RBI), Solge (2-for-5, RBI)
- Pitching:
Brynn Balliet (loss 4-3, 5 2/3 innings, six hits, six runs, six earned, one walk, two strikeouts),
Gen Kozub (1 1/3 innings, one hit, zero runs, zero walks and strikeouts)
- The Shorewomen had eight hits in the game and drew eight walks as they left 14 on base.
- WC had two errors in the field, leading to zero unearned runs.
For New York University (5-7)
- Hitting: Smith (3-for-4, two runs), Chloe Stone (1-for-2, two-run homer, two RBI), Hand (1-for-2, two runs, home run, RBI), Hofmann (2-for-3, RBI)
- Pitching:
Marina Egbert (win 1-2, six innings, seven hits, two runs, two earned, five walks, two strikeouts), Kluever (save 1, 2/3 inning, zero hits, runs, walks and strikeouts)
- The Violets had seven hits, worked out one walk and had one get on via a hit by pitch as they left three on base.
- NYU committed three errors in the field, leading to zero unearned runs for Washington.
