Shoremen Score First 11 in 16-9 Victory over Green Terror to Open Centennial Slate

Matthews Totals Career-Best Six Assists and Points and Garrison Ties Personal-High with Five Goals

WESTMINSTER, Md. – Visiting Washington College scored the game's first 11 goals on its way to a 12-1 halftime lead in a 16-9 win over host McDaniel in Centennial Conference men's lacrosse action on Saturday afternoon at Gill Stadium as WC junior attackman Grant Matthews (Baltimore, Md./St. Paul's School) totaled a career-best six assists and points.  The Shoremen improved to 3-5 on the season and 1-0 in the conference, while the Green Terror slip to 7-2 overall and 0-1 in the conference.

How It Happened
- Connor Garrison got the Shoremen on the board 6:57 into the first quarter on a pass from Matthews.  Cam Carrigan capped the first quarter scoring with 25 seconds left on Matthews' third assist of the quarter to give Washington a 4-0 lead after the stanza.
- The Shoremen scored the first seven goals of the second quarter to take an 11-0 lead on Garrison's fifth of the game with 4:19 left on a pass from Mac Hale.
- Jason Fritz got McDaniel on the board with 2:51 remaining in the second before Hale answered 36 ticks later on a pass from Carrigan to give WC a 12-1 lead at halftime.
- The Green Terror outscored the Shoremen 4-2 in both the third and fourth quarters to provide the final margin.

For The Shoremen (3-5, 1-0 CC)
- Scoring: Matthews (career-bests of six assists and six points), Garrison (game-high five goals to tie career-topping; six points), Carrigan (three goals and four points), Hale (two assists and goal), Luke Brennan (goal and helper)
- In Goal: Colin Gray (60:00, nine goals allowed, five saves)
- Carrigan, Tom Merritt and Carson Smith (two caused turnovers).
- Gabe Velasquez (9-for-13 on face-offs and five ground balls) and Owen Boone (7-for-11 on face-offs and five ground balls, both personal-bests).
- The Shoremen held a 44-29 advantage in shots and won 17 of the game's 29 face-offs.
- Washington was 19-for-19 in clears in the contest and was 0-for-1 on the man-up.
- Washington had 15 turnovers, while causing 11 McDaniel turnovers and picked up 25 ground balls.

For McDaniel (7-2, 0-1 CC)
- Scoring: Carter Youtz (team-high four goals), Fritz (two goals and two assists), Aidan Skelly (two scores), AJ Johnson (goal and assist)
- In Goal: Brighton Lorber (60:00, 16 goals allowed, nine saves)
- Tyler McDaniel (five ground balls and nine face-off wins) and Finn Forcucci (game-topping three caused turnovers)
- The Green Terror were 19-for-22 in clears, 2-for-6 in man-up situations and turned it over 20 times, while notching 10 caused turnovers.
- McDaniel scooped up 29 ground balls.

Notes
- Washington extended its winning streak over McDaniel to 24 straight games and has now won 49 games all-time versus McDaniel, the most against any one opponent, in just 53 games.
- Matthews had the Shoremen's first six-assist performance since Paul Miller handed out six helpers on March 2, 1988 versus Lynchburg in a 28-4 win.
