Shorewomen Off to Best Start in Centennial History in Going 50-50 with Garnet

Team Wins First Game 7-2 Before Falling in Game Two, 7-4

SWARTHMORE, Pa. – Visiting Washington College and host Swarthmore split a Centennial Conference softball doubleheader on Saturday afternoon at Clothier Softball Field.  The Shorewomen captured game one 7-2, while the Garnet got game two, 7-4.  The Shorewomen are 16-11-1 overall and 7-1 in the Centennial, while the Garnet are 15-6-1 and 4-3-1 respectively.  It is the first time WC is 7-1 in Centennial play, the squad's best start after eight games. 

Washington College 7 Swarthmore 2 (Game 1)

How It Happened
- Swarthmore got the game's opening run in the bottom of the first inning on a sacrifice fly by Alex Simon that scored Iris Barone with nobody out.
- The lead was short lived as Washington scored twice in the top of the second to grab a 2-1 lead.  With zero outs, Lexi Barnhart scored on a wild pitch to tie it at 1-1 and Lilly Cook scored on a sacrifice fly by Navaeh Unzueta to give the Shorewomen the lead the rest of the contest.
- The score remained 2-1 until the top of the sixth when Cook launched a solo home run to left to make 3-1.
- In its half of the sixth, Swarthmore got one back on a two out error that allowed Olivia McClammy to score to trim it to 3-2 and got Emily Bertrand to third as the tying run.  However, Barnhart got Molly O'Sullivan to pop out to Chloe Trefz at third to preserve the lead. 
- The Shorewomen would put the game away with four two-out runs in the top of the seventh.  Hannah Solge scored on a base hit up the middle by Jenna Harper to make it 4-2.  The next hitter, Barnhart singled up the middle as well to drive in both Julia Weglarz and Harper to make it a four-run lead.  Julia Guzman would score on a single up the middle by Unzueta to cap the outburst and scoring.

For The Shorewomen (16-10-1, 7-0 CC)
- Hitting: Barnhart (2-for-3, two RBI), Harper (2-for-4), Cook (2-for-4, two runs, home run), Solge (2-for-2, walk), Weglarz (2-for-4), Unzueta (two runs)
- Pitching: Barnhart (win 7-5, complete game, four hits, two runs, one earned, four walks, seven strikeouts)
- WC had 11 hits and drew two walks, while leaving six on base.
- The Shorewomen had one error in the win, leading to one run by the Garnet.

For Swarthmore (14-6-1, 3-3-1 CC)
- Hitting: Barone (1-for-2, run, walk, hit by pitch), McClammy (1-for-3, run)
- Pitching: Bertrand (loss 7-3, 6 2/3 innings, 10 hits, seven runs, five earned, two walks, two strikeouts)
- The Garnet had four hits, worked out four walks and had one get on due a hit by pitch, while stranding eight runners on base.
-Swarthmore committed two errors in the field, leading to two unearned runs for the Shorewomen.
Notes
- WC has won its first seven games of conference play for the first time.  The deepest it went prior without a loss was in 2012 when the team opened 4-0.

Swarthmore 7 Washington College 4 (Game 2)
How It Happened
- Like in the first game in the bottom of the first, Simon drove in Barone, this time on a one-out base hit up the middle.
- Solge would lead of the top of the third with a triple down the right field line and scored on a sacrifice fly to left by Shannon Rosche to tie it at 1-1. 
- With nobody out in the top of the fourth inning, Cook singled home Harper to make it 2-1.  WC would have runners on second and third with nobody out, but could not tack on.
- Serafina Tinio would register a two-run single to right to score McClammy and Bertrand to give the Garnet a 3-2 lead in the last of the fourth after the first two hitters were retired.
- WC would return the two-out, two-run base hit in the top of the fifth on a Mavoides single up the middle to chase in Gracelyn Goforth and Harper to put the road squad ahead 4-3.
- The home side answered with four in the last half of the fifth, all coming with two away.  Jordan Jackson would even the game at 4-4 on a single up the middle to plate Flannery McFadden.  Back-to-back singles by Simon and McClammy would load the bases and Bertrand would clear the bases and snap the tie with a double to center to score Jackson, Simon and McClammy to give the Garnet a 7-4 edge. 
- Washington did not get the tying run up to the plate in either of the final two innings.

For The Shorewomen (16-11-1, 7-1 CC)
- Hitting: Harper (2-for-4, two runs), Mavoides (1-for-1, two RBI)
- Pitching: Brynn Balliet (loss 8-4, 4 2/3 innings, nine hits, seven runs, seven earned, one walk, four strikeouts) 
- Washington had five hits, had reach via hit by pitch and drew two walks, while leaving five stranded on the basepaths.
- The Shorewomen did not commit an error in the game.

For Swarthmore (15-6-1, 4-3-1 CC)
- Hitting: Bertand (2-for-3, three RBI), McClammy (2-for-3, two runs), Simon (2-for-3, run, RBI), Tinio (two RBI)
- Pitching: Lane Barron (win 7-1, complete game, five hits, four runs, three earned, two walks, seven strikeouts)
- The Garnet had nine hits and earned one walk, while leaving just two runners on base.
- Swarthmore had one error, leading to one unearned run for Washington.

Notes
- The 7-1 start is the best in record after eight Centennial games in team history.  The 2023 team opened 6-1-1, while the 2012 and 2016 squads were 6-2 in the first eight CC contests.
