Softball Sweeps Haverford Sunday Afternoon 16-12 & 11-3

Chestertown, MD – Softball sweeps conference opponent Haverford for first time in seven years. They downed The Fords 16-12 and 11-3. 

Game 1: Washington College 16 Haverford 12

How It Happened
  • Haverford went up 3-0 quick in the first inning, all three runs were unearned off of two Shorewomen errors.
  • The first score of the day for Washington came as Jenna Harper doubled to right field allowing Julia Weglarz to score as she was walked in the first at bat of the inning. 
  • The Shorewomen opened it up in the bottom of the next innings. Nevaeh Unzueta singled to left center field which allowed Mia Mavoides to run home after she singled and stole second base to put her in scoring position. Gracelyn Goforth's sacrifice fly to center field allowed Unzueta to cross home plate. Two at bats later Lexi Barnhart doubled to left center earning her 2 RBI as Chloe Trefz who singled up the middle scored and Weglarz came home after she was walked. The Shorewomen led 7-4.
  • The third innings was another big one for the Shorewomen as they entered the inning down 9-7 but then scored six runs off of six hits. Goforth's RBI single allowed Unzueta to cross home plate after she singled to center field to start off the inning. Gen Kozub's 2 RBI double to left field put the Shoremen over the Fords 10-8. In the next at bat Lexi Cook also hit for a 2 RBI double forcing The Fords to make some pitching and infield switches. The inning concluded as the Shorewomen collected an unearned run as Unzueta singled to left field allowing Cook to score.
  • The Shorewomen would score their last runs in the bottom of the fifth off a Unzueta RBI single to left field allowing Cook to run home after she singled in her at bat. Trefz then doubled to right field center allowing Unzueta and Hannah Solge to score on an unearned run as she got on base due to a fielding error by The Fords.
  • Washington gave up three runs in the top of the sixth but ultimately won game one 16-12.

For The Shoremen (16-11-1)
Hitting: Nevaeh Unzueta ( 3 for 4, 3 RBI), Lilly Cook ( 3 for 5, 1 double, 3 RBI)
Pitching: Gen Kozub ( win 2-1, 4.0 innings pitched)

For Haverford (7-17)
Hitting: T. Pearlstei ( 1 for 3, 1 double, 4 RBI)
Pitching: A. Finkele ( loss 1-5, 1.1 innings pitched)

Game 2: Washington College 11 Haverford 3 - 5 innings

How It Happened
  • Haverford scored first in the top of the first inning, two runs scored off of two doubles.
  • Lilly Cook had an answer in the bottom of the first as she singled to the shortstop and tallied 2 RBI as Jenna Harper who singled up the middle scored and Gracelyn Goforth recorded an unearned run.
  • In the following inning Chloe Trefz opened things up for the Shorewomen as she was walked. In the next at bat Julia Weglarz singled to left field advancing Trefz. Jenna Harper hit a sacrifice fly to center sending Trefz home and putting the Shorewomen up 3-2. Lilly Cook hit a 2 RBI single through the left side which allowed Weglarz and Goforth ,who singled to center field, to run home.
  • The Shorewomen kept The Fords to two runs and  scored thrice more in the bottom of the fourth. Jenna Harper started it off with a double to left field which allowed Lexi Barnhart to send her home as she singled to center field in the next at bat. Hannah Solge hit a two run home run to right center field four at bats later sending Julia Guzman home who pinch hit for Barnhart. The Shorewomen were ip 8-2.
  • Two home runs in the bottom of the fifth sealed the deal for the Shorewomen. Harper's two run home run to center field allowed Weglarz and herself to run home. A quick pitching change for The Fords and then Lilly Wenzel ,who was pinch hitting for Guzman, homered ending the game with an eight run lead over The Fords, 11-3. 
For The Shoremen (18-11-1)
Hitting: Jenna Harper ( 3 for 3, 1 HR , 1 double , 3 RBI), Lilly Wenzel ( 1 for 1, 1 HR, 1 RBI) 
Pitching: Brynn Balliet (win 9-4, 5.0 innings pitched, 3 strikeouts)

For  Muhlenberg (7-19)
Hitting: L. Martin ( 2 for 3, 2 doubled, 1 RBI)
Pitching: R. McQueen ( loss 2-9, 3.2 innings pitched)
