Shoremen Declaw Nittany Lions Twice 5-4 and 1-0

The Shoremen advance to 3-1 on the season

Chestertown, MD- The Washington College Baseball Team took care of Penn State Abington in their first non-conference doubleheader. The Shoremen took the Nittany Lions in the ninth inning of game one, 5-4, and held a steady one run late lead over PSU Abington in game two.  

Game 1: Washington College 5 PSU-Abington 4 

How It Happened 

  • Both teams went scoreless in the first inning, each team also left a runner on base.  
  • Penn State Abington scored the first run in the top of the second. In the bottom of the second, Zach Stolze singled to first to get on base. Alex Dardaris hit a triple to advance to third and send Stolze home. The score was tied 1-1. 
  • The Shoremen gave up no hits in the top of the third, Drew Kinsey hit a single in the bottom of the third recording the only hit for the Shoremen in the inning. The score remained at 1-1.  
  • In the top of the fifth, the Nittany Lions added one more run to take a 2-1 advantage. The Shoremen responded in the bottom of the inning, Will Turner sent a double to left field. Kinsey followed up with a single to center field sending Turner home to tie the contest, 2-2.  
  • The visitors scored the only run of the sixth inning off a sacrifice fly to retake the lead 3-2.  
  • With bases loaded, Stolze sent a ball to left field allowing Everett to score on the play, tying the game at 3-3 after seven innings. 
  • At the top of the ninth, the Nittany Lions scored off a home run, breaking the tie 4-3.  
  • Turner got on first at the bottom of the ninth, with Pete Kokinis stepping in as the pinch runner.  
  • Kinsey sent a double to right field allowing Kokinis to score tying the game at 4-4. Kinsey advanced to third off a wild pitch, setting up a walk-off single from Stolze to propel him home. The Shoremen won, 5-4.

How It Happened 

  • Reese Hirsh's single to left center filed in the bottom of the second was the first hit for the Shoremen. He got thrown out at second on a steal attempt to leave the score still empty, 0-0, at the end of two.  
  • The Nittany Lions had two runners on in the top of the fourth. The Shoremen defense made sure they were left there as the Lions hitter batted into a double play as Ty Everitt collected the ball,
  • threw it to Brady Wozniak at second base who then threw to Chase Ruppel at first to get the batter and the runner out. The score remained 0-0.  
  • Wozniak singled to right field at the top of the sixth, he advanced to second on a throwing error by the rightfielder. Pete Kokinis bunted to the third baseman sending Wozniak to third and advancing himself to first.  
  • The Shoremen earned their first run of the game as Ty Everitt reached base on a fielder's choice which allowed Wozniak to score. The Shoremen were up 1-0 heading into the seventh.  
  • The next runner on base for the Shoremen was in the bottom of the eighth as Kokinis was hit by a pitch to send him to first. He was caught stealing and thrown out before the Shoremen could bat him in. The score remained 1-0 at the end of eight innings.  
  • The Shoremen recorded a pop fly out and a double play in the top of the ninth to secure their second win over the Nittany Lions, 1-0.
