Shorewomen Softball Split WIth Saints To Open The Season

Lilly Wenzel secures Game 2 win with grand slam

Arlington, VA - Washington College Softball opened their season up splitting with the Saints of Marymount. Lilly Wenzel grabbed a grand slam in the top of the sixth inning of game two to secure the first win of the season for the Shorewomen, 11-6.  

Game 1: Washington College 3 Marymount

How It Happened  

  • The Shorewomen were down 4-0 at the end of four innings.  
  • Mia Mavoides was the first batter up for the Shorewomen in the top of the fifth. She singled up the middle to put herself on first. Mavoides recorded a stolen base soon after, moving her to second.  
  • Shannon Rosche was the next batter up. Her single through the left side advanced her to first and sent Mavoides home to score the first run for the Shorewomen. Rosche was able to advance to second on a throw that tried to stop the runner from scoring. Chloe Trefz singled to right field advancing Rosche to third and putting herself at first. Trefz stole second and the Shorewomen had two runners in scoring position. Gracelyn Goforth sacrifice flied to send Rosche home and Trefz to third. Lilly Cook was the next up and singled through the left side sending Trefz home. The Shorewomen were within one, 3-4. 
  • The Saint scored five runs in the bottom of the sixth to go up 9-3 over the Shorewomen.  
  • Trefz hit a deep triple to right field as the second batter for the Shorewomen in the top of the seventh, but remained on base as the Saints completed the final two outs of the game. The Shorewomen fell 9-3.

Game 2: Washington College 11 Marymount 6 

How It Happened  

  • Nevaeh Unzueta was the first batter up for the Shorewomen in game two. She hit a triple down the right field line to put herself in scoring position with Jenna Harper as the next batter up. Harper sacrifice flied to right field sending Unzueta home and earning a run for the Shorewomen.  
  • The Saints hit back-to-back homeruns in the bottom of the second to go up 2-1 over the Shorewomen. They scored two more runs in the bottom of the third to extend their lead to 4-1. 
  • In the top of the fourth, Lilly Wenzel doubled into the left-field center gap. Gracelyn Goforth was the next batter up and was walked to put two Shorewomen on base. Mia Mavoides doubled to left field during her at bat, earning two RBI and putting the Shorewomen within one, 4-3. 
  • In the top of the fifth, Unzueta hit a single to the centerfielder. She then stole second to put her in scoring position. Lilly Cook was walked soon after as the Shorewomen had two on base with two outs. Wenzel was the next batter up, she hit a line drive down the right field line earning herself a double and two RBI as Unzueta and Cook both scored. The Shorewomen took the lead, 5-4. Goforth recorded a double of her own right after sending a ball over the short stop's head into the left center gap. She recorded an RBI as Wenzel was able to reach home and the Shorewomen took a two-run lead.  
  • Julia Guzman avoided a tag after hitting the ball to the first baseman earning herself a single to get things started for the Shorewomen in the top of the sixth. Becca Foulk recorded a single of her own as the next batter up, her hit dropped into centerfield. Chloe Trefz was hit by a pitch immediately after, loading the bases for the Shorewomen with zero outs. Cook won a full count battle with the Saints' pitcher and was walked yet again to keep the bases loaded and send a runner home. Shorewomen led, 7-4. With bases loaded and two outs, Wenzel steps up to the plate and hammers a grand slam homerun over the centerfield fence. The Shorewomen ended the inning up, 11-4. 
  • The Saints scored twice more in the bottom of the seventh, but it was not enough as Cook ended the game for the Shorewomen on a diving catch in left field. The Shorewomen earned their first win of the season, 11-6.
