Shorewomen Softball Empty On Opening Day Of Spring Break Trip

Clermont, FL - The Washington College Softball Team opened their spring break trip down in Florida. They went 0-2 on the day, taking North Central to extra innings and falling to Pacific Lutheran in five innings.  
Game 1: Washington College 7 North Central College 8 ( 8 innings )
How It Happened  

  • The Shorewomen were down 6-0 in the bottom of the fourth before Lilly Wenzel recorded the first hit for the Shorewomen putting her on first and sending Lilly Cook to second who was walked the at bat earlier. Two batters later, the bases were loaded, Julia Weglarz was up to bat. She was walked sending Wenzel home to score the first run for the Shorewomen. 
  • Becca Foulk hit the ball down the right side of the infield towards the third baseman and was thrown out at first. Jenna Harper was batted home and recorded the second run for the Shorewomen. They were down 6-2 at the conclusion of four innings.  
  • Nevaeh Unzueta was the first batter up for the Shorewomen in the bottom of the fifth. She homered to left center field to put the Shorewomen within three, 6-3.  
  • In the bottom of the seventh, Mia Mavoides hit a single to right field. Chloe Trefz sat on second as she doubled to centerfield two batters earlier. She advanced home putting the Shorewomen down two, 6-4. Wenzel was up to bat with two on base and two outs, she singled up the center to put herself on base and record two RBI. The score was tied 6-6.  
  • The Shorewomen could not put the game away in the bottom of the seventh so the game went to extra innings. North Central was able to score two runs in the top of the eighth leading into the bottom of the inning, 8-6. Harper was placed on second base to start the bottom of the inning. Gracelyn Goforth hit a single to send Harper home putting the Shorewomen within one, 8-7. The rest of the inning was empty for the Shorewomen as they were defeated by North Central.

Game 2: Washington College 1 Pacific Lutheran 9 ( 5 innings )

How It Happened  

  • Pacific Lutheran scored two runs in the bottom of the fourth inning.  
  • At the top of the fifth inning, Mia Mavoides reached base on an error by the first baseman. She stole second and was in prime scoring position for Jenna Harper who was up to bat next. Harper laid a bunt down right in front of home plate and beat the throw to get herself on first. Mavoides scored. The Shorewomen trailed, 2-1.  
  • Pacific Lutheran scored seven times in the bottom of the fifth inning to go up 9-1 over the Shorewomen. This ended the game via the eight runs after five innings mercy rule.
