Washington College Volleyball Opens Season Up In NJ

Wayne, NJ– The Washington College Volleyball team opened up their season in New Jersey taking on William Paterson and Lynchburg. They dropped the first game 3-0 to the Pioneers and fell in a five set battle to Lynchburg, 3-2.  

Game One: Washington College 0 William Paterson 3 
How It Happened 

  • The Shorewomen jumped out to an early lead over William Paterson, 4-3, before the Pioneers took the lead and would never relinquish it. The Shorewomen dropped the first set, 25-14.  
  • Allison McKechnie began the second set with a kill to put the Shorewomen up, 1-0. A kill by Lyndsey Wessel from Alexis Stubbs moved the score to 2-2 early in the set. The Pioneers earned five straight points to put themselves up 7-2. Gianna Folke and Wessel assisted on a block to stop the run and earn another point for the Shorewomen. The Shorewomen tallied seven more points in the set, but could not catch the Pioneers as they fell in the second set, 25-10. 
  • The final set of the game began with two straight Shorewomen points, a Wessel kill followed by a Stubbs service ace. Three points in a row put William Paterson up 4-3 before a McKechnie kill tied the score 4-4. Mistakes by the Pioneers closed the gap for the Shorewomen as they trailed 14-9. A service ace by Stubbs put the Shorewomen within four, 14-10. The final point for the Shorewomen of the set would come thanks to Giselle Kleinbussink

Game Two: Washington College 2 Lynchburg 3 
How It Happened  

  • The Shorewomen took the first set of game two, 25-18. The Shorewomen led 6-4 before Lynchburg went on a five point run to take the lead 9-6. The Shorewomen followed with a three-point run of their own fueled by two kills from Kleinbussink and Stubbs and a service error by Lynchburg. The Shorewomen pulled away quickly, 18-13 and only gave up five more points to end the set with a seven point lead.  
  • The Hornets took the second set, 25-16.  
  • Washington College opened the set with an early spark as the Mustangs recorded a service ace. After a quick back-and-forth, the Shorewomen grabbed momentum behind Wessel, who delivered a kill to make it 3-1. From there, Gianna Folke and McKechnie chipped in with kills to keep Washington in striking distance. The turning point came when Anna Titter stepped to the service line. She sparked a dominant run, combining with McKechnie, Wessel, and Kleinbussink at the net. During that stretch, WC racked up kills, forced multiple Lynchburg attack errors, and built a commanding lead at 22-13. McKechnie and Folke added steady offense down the stretch, and the Shorewomen closed the door when Wessel hammered home the final kill for a decisive 25-15 third-set victory. 
  • The Hornets answered, taking the fourth set 25-16. 
  • In the fifth set, the Shorewomen led 10-6 and a kill from Kaysie Lynch put them ahead 11-7. A service error gave the point to the Hornets, but a kill from Folke assisted by Stubbs allowed the Shorewomen to get the point right back. They held the lead steady at 13-9. Back-to-back kills by the Hornets put them within three, 13-11. A Wessel kill put the Shorewomen one point away from taking the set. Four straight points put the Hornets up one, 15-14. A service error by Lynchburg tied the score 15-15, but the Hornets had an answer scoring the final two points and taking the set, 17-15.

Up Next 
The Shorewomen will participate in day two of their opening tournament in NJ at Montclair State University tomorrow, August 30th. They will take on Montclair at 12 PM and Hartwick at 2 PM.
