Shorewomen Sweep Saints In Season Opening Doubleheader

Washington, DC– Washington College Softball opens its season up with a sweep against the Saints of Marymount on the road 11-9 and 9-4.  

Game 1: Washington College 11 Marymount 9 

How It Happened  

  • Jenna Harper had the first hit of the season for the Shorewomen. Her double to left field put her in scoring position, but a pop-fly left her out on base. Marymount scored in the bottom of the second inning putting them up 1-0 over the Shorewomen.  
  • Lilly Wenzel doubled to right center field to begin the top of the fourth inning. First year, Emma Trainer was walked as the next batter to put two Shorewomen on base. Harper, the next batter, earned an RBI off a single over the head of the second baseman as Wenzel scored. A wild pitch brought Trainer home and advanced Harper to third. Harper scored unearned as Addison Smith popped up to the shortstop, and the ball was dropped. The Shorewomen ended the top of the fourth inning up. 3-1. 
  • The Shorewomen scored two runs in the top of the sixth to go up 5-2 over the Saints.  
  • Marymount tied the game up in the bottom of the seventh, 5-5. Grace Allen and Gracelyn Goforth teamed up to secure the third out and force extra innings as the game was tied at the conclusion of seven innings.  
  • Trainer who was on second at the start of the eighth inning was batted in after Harper singled to left field. Becca Foulk sent Harper home the next at bat to put the Shorewomen up 7-5 early in the eighth inning. The Shorewomen collected four more runs as Julia Weglarz doubled to left field to send two runs in and Goforth homered immediately after to send herself and Weglarz across home plate.  
  • Marymount scored four runs in the bottom of the eighth, but they could not combat the deficit as the Shorewomen took game one, 11-9. 

For the Shorewomen ( 1-0 )  
Batting: Jenna Harper (4 hits, 1 double, 2 RBI), Gracelyn Goforth (1 home run, 2 RBI), Julia Weglarz (1 double, 2 RBI) 
Pitching: Addison Smith (win, 6 strikeouts) 

Game 2: Washington College 9 Marymount 4 

How It Happened 

  • Grace Allen started the second game with a single to left field and then stole second. A single to right field by Gracelyn Goforth pushed Allen to third which put her in scoring position. Lilly Wenzel earned an RBI as she sent Allen home to put the Shorewomen up 1-0.  
  • The score was tied 1-1 in the top of the third. Goforth doubled to right center field with two outs to start momentum for the Shorewomen. Wenzel singled to left field sending Goforth home and giving the Shorewomen the lead again, 2-1  
  • Jenna Harper doubled to left center field the next at bat which put both her and Wenzel in scoring position for Emma Trainer. Trainer singled to left field earning an RBI as Wenzel scored. The Shorewomen were up 3-1. Cece Johnston earned her first hit in a Washington College uniform with a triple and 2 RBI as Trainer and Harper both scored. The Shorewomen left the inning up 5-1.  
  • The Shorewomen scored one run in the top of the fourth and the top of the fifth to go up 7-3 over the Saints. Marymount scored one run in the bottom of the sixth.  
  • Katie Tribbitt singled to start the seventh inning. Lindsay Worley tapped in to pinch run for Tribitt. Allen doubled down the left field line to advance Worley to third. Claire Barnes flied out to send Worley home and put the Shorewomen up 8-4. Goforth doubled to left field to send Allen home and extend the Shoremen lead, 9-4.  
  • The Shorewomen collected the final three outs of the game in the bottom of the seventh to secure the sweep over the Saints 9-4.  

For the Shorewomen ( 2-0 )  
Batting: Gracelyn Goforth (3 hits, 1 RBI, 2 doubles), Cece Johnston (1 hit, 1 triple, 2 RBI), Jenna Harper (2 hits, 1 RBI, 1 double) 
Pitching: Emmie Meeks (win, 7.0 innings pitched) 

Up Next: 
The Shorewomen will head to Florida for their Spring Break Games. They will face Albertus Magnus on March 8th at 9 AM.
