Shorewomen Softball Continue Spring Break Compeition

Winter Haven, FL– The Washington College softball team continues their stint in in Florida. The Shorewomen held the lead against Penn State Behrend until the sixth innning, dropping the game, 6-4. They also fell to Thomas, 10-3.

Game 1: Washington College 4 Penn State Behrend 6 

How It Happened  

  • Penn State Behrend led 3-0 heading into the bottom of the fourth inning.  
  • The Shorewomen had two on base when Anna McCabe was up to bat. She hit at the third baseman who bobbled the ball allowing Gracelyn Goforth to advance home. The bases were loaded the next at bat as Julia Weglarz was walked. The Shorewomen left the inning with bases loaded, but were on the board, 3-1.  
  • In the bottom of the fifth, Emma Trainer walked as the leadoff batter. Grace Allen singled through the five six hole in the next at bat to advance Trainer and put her on first. Jenna Harper bunted, earned herself first base, and advanced both runners to load the bases for Goforth. Goforth was walked sending Trainer home and keeping the bases loaded for Cece Johnston.  
  • Johnston was hit by a pitch to tie the game up, 3-3.  With one out, McCabe was up to bat. She hit right at the shortstop, sending Goforth home and taking the lead for the Shorewomen, 4-3.  
  • Penn State Behrend took back the lead, 5-4 in the top of the sixth inning and earned one run in the top of the seventh to go up, 6-4. 
  • Johnston led off the bottom of the seventh with a single to right center. McCabe singled to right field advancing Johnston to second and putting herself on first. Weglarz was walked to load the bases again for the Shorewomen. The bases were left loaded for the Shorewomen as they fell to Penn State Behrend, 6-4.

Pitching: Katie Tribitt (4.0 innings), Emma Kitchin (3.1 innings pitched) 

Game 2: Washington College 3 Thomas 10 

How It Happened 

  • The Shorewomen hopped out to a 3-0 lead over Thomas in the top of the first inning. Lindsay Worley led off with a bunt single to third base, she then stole second. Jenna Harper singled to centerfield to put Worley at third. Gracelyn Goforth singled to center field to send Worley home. Cece Johnston followed that at bat up with a double to send both Harper and Goforth home and put the Shorewomen up early.  
  • Thomas earned three runs in the bottom of the second to tie the game, 3-3. They took the lead in the bottom of the third scoring one run, 4-3, they then scored six in the bottom of the fifth to take a lead of seven over the Shorewomen, 10-3. The Shorewomen had no answer as Thomas held them at three runs.

Cece Johnston (1 hit, 2 RBI, 1 double), Gracelyn Goforth (3 hits, 1 RBI, 1 double)
Pitching: Anna Hutchingson (2.1 innings pitched) ,Addison Smith (2.1 innings pitched), Katie Tribitt (1.1 innings pitched)

The Shorewomen continue their Spring Break games with a doubleheader on Thursday, March 12th against Beloit and Dominican at 1:45 PM and 4:00 PM respectively.
