Shorewomen Softball Drop Two in Second Day of Spring Break Competition

Winter Haven, FL– Washington College Softball falls in day two of Spring Break, 9-4 and 8-6. The Shorewomen's Gracelyn Goforth earned her 100th career hit in game one against Saint Jospeh's College of Maine, the first Shorewomen to earn this milestone this season.  

Game 1: Washington College 4 Saint Joseph's of Maine 9 

How It Happened  

  • Julia Weglarz was walked as the leadoff hitter in the top of the second inning. She stole second and advanced to third on a ground out. Anna McCabe batted her in with a single through the right side.  
  • Saint Joseph's scored five runs in the bottom of the same inning to go up, 5-1 over the Shorewomen.  
  • The next run for the Shorewomen came in the top of the fifth inning. Jenna Harper doubled down the left field line to lead off. Gracelyn Goforth recorded her 100th career hit with a single to the shortstop, and then advanced on an error sending Harper home. Cece Johnston batted Goforth in two batters later with a single through the right side. The Shorewomen trailed, 5-3. 
  • Mia Filliben earned her first career hit with a single to centerfield in the top of the sixth inning. Emma Trainer replaced her on base as a pinch runner. A ground out moved Trainer to second and a single to left field by Grace Allen sent her home. The Shorewomen were down one, 5-4.  
  • Saint Joseph's of Maine scored four runs in the bottom of the sixth and earned three quick outs to take the game over the Shorewomen, 9-4. 

For the Shorewomen (3-2)  
Batting: Cece Johnston (2 hits, 1 RBI) 
Pitching: Emmie Meeks (4.0 innings pitched, 3 strikeouts) 

Game 2: Washington College 6 Gordon 8 

How It Happened 

  • The Shorewomen trailed 1-0  heading into the bottom of the second innning. Cece Johnston singled up the middle to get things going for the Shorewomen. Anna Hutchinson advanced Johnston on a sacrifice bunt. Anna McCabe singled to right center field earning an RBI as Johnston scored and the Shorewomen were on the board, 1-1.  
  • Gordon led 4-1 heading into the bottom of the fifth inning.  
  • Jenna Harper singled to right field to put her on base first. Julia Weglarz doubled down the left field line to send Harper home and move the Shorewomen score to two, 4-2.  
  • The Shorewomen took the lead in the bottom of the sixth inning as they scored four runs off five hits. Hutchinson started the inning off with a single to left field. Emma Trainer entered as a pinch runner for Hutchinson, and then she stole second. Mia Filliben singled to right field earning her an RBI and Jennar Harper captured two RBI as she batted in Filliben and McCabe who singled two at bats before. The last run of the inning was batted in by Goforth who sent Lyndsay Worley home with a sacrifice fly.  
  • Those would be the last runs scored by the Shorewomen as Gordon scored four runs in the top of the seventh and held the Shorewomen to six as they took the game, 8-6.  

For the Shorewomen (3-3)  
Batting: Julia Weglarz (1 hit, 1 RBI, 1 double), Jenna Harper (2 hits, 2 RBI) 
Pitching: Addison Smith (7.0 innings pitched, 5 strikeouts)

The Shorewomen continue their Spring Break competition with two games on March 10. They will face Penn State Behrend at 4:15 PM and Thomas College at 6:30 PM.
