Kokinis Hits for Cycle as Shoremen Fend Off Highlanders, 15-12

Junior Goes 5-for-5 with Five RBI, Three Runs Scored and Home Run

CHESTERTOWN, Md. – Host Washington College jumped out to a 13-3 lead after six innings and held off a comeback attempt by visiting Cairn to come away with a 15-12 on Thursday afternoon at Athey Baseball Park. The Shoremen improve to 9-8 on the campaign, while the Highlanders slip to 1-12. In the win, junior outfielder Pete Kokinis (Owings Mills, Md./McDonogh School) hit for the cycle, going 5-for-5 at the plate.

How It Happened
- The Shoremen scored three times with two outs in the bottom of the first inning. Chase Ruppel came home on a throwing error for the first run and then Drew Kinsey socked a solo home run down the left line. Two hitters later, Ty Everitt plated Brady Wozniak on a single to right for a 3-0 Washington lead after one.
- In the top of the second, the Highlanders got two to cut it to 3-2 before the Shoremen in their half scored three times to make it 6-2. Kokinis led off the frame with a homer to right-center for a 4-2 lead. With one out, Ty Powell scored on a wild pitch for a three-run lead and Brett Connolly came home on a sacrifice fly by Kinsey for a four-run cushion.
- Cairn picked up a run on a homer to left in the top of the third with one away before WC got it back in the last of the fourth on a two-out single up the middle by Wozniak that drove home Kinsey.
- Washington tacked on four in the bottom of the fifth and two in the last of the sixth to push the lead to 13-3. Kokinis completed the cycle with an RBI triple in the bottom of the sixth that scored Dino DiMauro to give the home side a 10-3 advantage with nobody out.
- The Highlanders got four in the top of the seventh to trim the lead to 13-7 before Kokinis plated Everitt and DiMauro on a two-out double in the bottom half of the inning to make it 15-7 after seven.
- Cairn netted three runs in the top of the eighth and two in the top of ninth, but was unable to get the tying run to the plate and WC held on for the win.

- Hitting: Kokinis (5-for-5, five RBI, three runs, home run, hit for cycle), Connolly (3-for-5, two RBI, two runs), Kinsey (2-for-4, two runs, two RBI, home run), Wozniak (2-for-3, two walks, run, RBI), Ruppel (2-for-5, run, RBI), DiMauro (three runs), Powell (two runs)
- Pitching: Matt Corda (win 2-0, six innings, nine hits, three runs, two earned, one walk, five strikeouts)
- Washington had 16 hits, six walks and had four get on via hit by pitch, while leaving eight on base.
- The Shoremen made five errors in the game, leading to four runs for the Highlanders.

Notes
- Kokinis' cycle is the second for the Shoremen this season as Connolly hit for the cycle versus Marywood on March 12. The five hits, five RBI and three runs were a career-best for Kokinis.
