Shorewomen Softball Slips To Salisbury

Chestertown, MD- Washington College Softball fell against Salisbury in home doubleheader.

Game 1: Washington College 0 Salisbury 16 

How It Happened 

  • Salisbury scored in the first inning and then earned six more in the top of the second.  
  • Becca Foulk singled over the third baseman's in the bottom of the second and moved to second base thanks to a wild pitch. Salisbury was able to record the third out before Foulk was able to be batted in. The Shorewomen trailed, 7-0. 
  • Salisbury went up 14-0 in the top of the fourth inning.  
  • Anna Hutchison started the bottom of the fourth with a double to center field, inches away from a home run. Foulk followed her double with a single over the first baseman's head, Hutchison moved to third. Three straight outs left the two runners on base and kept the Shorewomen scoreless.  
  • Salisbury scored twice more in the top of the fifth and recorded three straight outs to take the game, 16-0.  

For the Shorewomen (5-14)  
Batting: Anna Hutchison (1 hit, 1 double), Becca Foulk (2 hits) 
Pitching: Emma Kitchin (1.1 innings pitched, 2 strikeouts) 

Game 2: Washington College 6 Salisbury 13 

How It Happened 

  • Salisbury scored the first two runs of the game.  
  • Lilly Wenzel began the first inning with a walk. Cece Johnston singled up the middle to put herself on base and push Wenzel to second. Two fly outs ended the inning for the Shorewomen with two left on base.  
  • Grace Allen singled up the middle to earn the first hit of the bottom of the second inning for the Shorewomen. Julia Weglarz was walked as the next batter. The Shorewomen had two on with zero outs. Becca Foulk's sacrifice bunt was successful, moving both runners up a base. Anna McCabe grounded out to the second baseman, sending a runner home and putting the Shorewomen on the board, 2-1.  
  • Salisbury scored with a home run to extend the score to 3-1. 
  • A homerun to right center field by Lilly Wenzel brought the answer for the Shorewomen in the bottom of the third inning. The Shorewomen had bases loaded later in the inning but left all three on as Salisbury recorded the third out on a pop up to the pitcher. 
  • Gracelyn Goforth and Wenzel each earned base hits in the bottom of the fourth inning to put two runners on with one out. Emma Trainer singled to the shortstop, sending Wenzel home and tying the score at 3-3 heading into the fifth inning.  
  • Goforth and Wenzel began the bottom of the sixth with hits once again. Goforth singled to third baseman and Wenzel doubled to right center field. A walk for Johnston loaded the bases with one out for the Shorewomen. Emma Trainer grounded out to the third baseman, earning an RBI and moving the score to 7-4, Shorewomen still trailed heading into the seventh.  
  • Salisbury scored six runs in the top of the seventh to go up 13-4.  
  • Allen started the bottom of the seventh inning with her first career home run to centerfield. Wenzel batted in Filliben who reached on a fielder's choice as the Shorewomen crept up on Salisbury, 13-6. Those would be the only runs the Shorewomen could send home as they fell in game two. 

For the Shorewomen (5-15)  
Batting: Lilly Wenzel (4 hits, 2 RBI, 1 double, 1 home run), Grace Allen (3 hits, 1 home run) 
Pitching: Emmie Meeks (6.2 innings pitched, 5 strikeouts) 

Up Next:  
The Shorewomen will host Gettysburg on March 28th for their first conference double-header of the season at 1 and 3 PM.
