Trap & Skeet Impressive at Summer Open

Greenwood, DE- Washington College Trap & Skeet (WCTS) hit the road to take part in the Summer Heat competition which is a National Sporting Clays Association (NSCA) tournament held at Owens Station Sporting Clays. This is a non collegiate event open to all active NSCA members. Competitors are placed into C when they first join the NSCA and can move up by winning or receiving "punches" or down during the end of season "Classification Review". In addition to competing with general NSCA members in class WCTS athletes also compete in the Junior Concurrent Category where they are ranked among other competitors of similar age.

Sporting clays is most often compared to golf with a shotgun. Competitors walk or use golf carts to travel around a course, usually a mile or more, stopping at different stations to shoot at different presentations of targets. These can either be true/simo pairs where two targets are released at the same time or report pairs where the first target is thrown and shot at and the second target is thrown on the report of the first shot. Sporting clays originated in England to replicate hunting situations and came to the US in the early 1980s and one of the first courses ever built was located at Remington Farms (currently Chesapeake farms) between Chestertown and Rock Hall, Maryland.

WCTS athletes arrived at Owens Station in hot and humid conditions to compete in the 100 target Report Pairs Course. After 1.1 miles over about three hours the last shots were fired and Junior Trice Moore '28 was on top for the Shoremen breaking 78/100 winning both D Class 1st Place and Junior Concurrent 1st Place. Three more Shoremen were right behind him with MJ Rosenstiel '28 crushing 72/100 and earning 2nd place honors in D Class and Junior. Only 1 target behind finishing 3rd in D Class and Junior was Senior Max McNulty Van Oordt '27 (71/100). Freshman Cole Coppage '30 and Ethan Kimmins '30 broke 70/100 and 69/100 respectively to round out the top 5.

Had this been a collegiate event the team score would have been 360/500 which is 6 targets higher than WCTS posted at the 2026 ACUI Collegiate National Championship. On the teams performance Coach Doug Pfaff '10 said "I was very proud of how everyone performed today. There were lots of big air targets which are very similar to what our athletes will experience in Texas. Today really allowed to see where we need to focus our training over the next 6 months to get ready and I know they are up to the challenge"

Washington College Trap & Skeet will continue the National Governing Body registered target portion of their season. The team will compete at Sudlersville Skeet Club on September 12 at the MD State Skeet Shoot (NSSA) and September 19 at the Delmarva Open (NSSA).
