Ellison Wins B1 Singles, Laux & Lisco
Play for B3 Singles Crown
FREDERICKSBURG, VA -- The Washington College men's
tennis team was well-represented at this weekend's ITA Southeast
Regional Championships held at the University of Mary Washington.
The Shoremen captured the B1 singles draw and won the top two spots
in the B3 singles draw.
Sophomore Aaron Ellison (Largo, FL/St.
Petersburg) topped Catholic's Bernardo
Nogales, 6-3, 6-2, in the first round of B1 singles and
bested Washington and Lee's Todd Hatcher, 6-3,
6-0, in the quarterfinals. In the semifinals, he defeated
Swarthmore's Seth Udelson, 6-3, 6-1. Ellison won
B1 singles by defeating Hampden-Sydney's Shad
Harrell, 6-3, 6-2, in the final.
Sophomore Kyle Lisco (Toms River, NJ/Toms
River North) and junior Andrew Laux (Mt. Sinai,
NY/Mt. Sinai) both reached the final match of B3 singles.
Laux defeated Bridgewater's Brad Dewitt, 6-3, 6-1,
in the first round and beat Stevenson's Ted Cooke
by the same score in the quarterfinals. In the semifinals, he
topped Moravian's Kevin Holze, 6-4, 6-2. Lisco
outlasted Grove City's Shaun Mills, 2-6, 7-6(4),
10-4, in the first round and downed Hampden-Sydney's Tal
Covington, 6-3, 6-2, in the quarterfinals. In the
semifinals, he beat Franklin & Marshall's Cameron
Relic, 7-5, 3-6, 6-4. Laux and Lisco played the final of
B3 singles at Washington College, with Lisco posting a 2-6, 6-2,
6-0, victory.
Junior Adam Cranford (Bel Air, MD/John
Carroll) and sophomore Kevin Papen (Dover,
DE/Caesar Rodney) competed in championship draw singles.
Cranford lost to Salisbury's David Lupinetti, 6-2,
6-4, in the first round, but bounced back with a 6-0, 6-1, win over
Elizabethtown's Manrique Arrea in the first
consolation round. In the second consolation round, Cranford fell
to Mary Washington's Sam Wichlin, 4-6, 7-5, 10-6.
Papen lost to Swarthmore's Malik Mubeen, 6-3, 6-4,
in the first round and Washington and Lee's Jonathan
Gaffney, 3-6, 7-6(4), 10-8, in the first consolation
round.
Freshman Josh Hedrick (Dover,
DE/Dover) lost in the first round of B4 singles to
Randolph-Macon's Josh Lee, 6-0, 7-5, before
falling to York's Steve Collison, 3-6, 6-4, 10-8,
in the consolation quarterfinals.
In championship draw doubles, Cranford and Papen
lost to second-seeded Scott Burtzlaff and
Evan Thomas of Salisbury, 8-4, in the first round,
but bested Grove City's Peter Davis and
Ricky Garrett, 8-1, in the first consolation
round. In the consolation quarterfinals, they topped Washington and
Lee's Will Hall and Hayden White,
9-7. In the consolation semifinals, Cranford and Papen defeated
Swarthmore's Seth Udelson and Stephen
Youngblood, 8-1 before falling to Mary Washington's
Wichlin and Sam Baver, 9-8(5), in the consolation
final.
In B1 doubles, Ellison and Laux were edged out by
Christopher Newport's Robbie Wagner and
Dylan Young, 9-8(4), in the first round. They
received a bye in the consolation quarterfinals before falling to
Swarthmore's Eric Legunn and James
Wieler, 8-5, in the consolation semifinals.
Hedrick and senior Timothy Parks (Geneva,
Switzerland/College du Leman) opened B3 doubles with an
8-3 loss to Muhlenberg's Jeffrey Delman and
Dan Rifkin, 8-3, but rebounded with an 8-1 win
over Virginia Wesleyan's Zak Bartley and
Donnie Greathouse in the consolation
quarterfinals. In the consolation semifinals, they downed
Shenandoah's Peter Baggan and Ethan
Lawrence, 8-1. In the consolation final, Parks and Hedrick
defeated Nick Conte and Mike
Steinberger of King's, 8-0.
