Box Score DeBoy Scores Career-High 22 Points
HAVERFORD, PA – Host Haverford College had
four players tally double-digit point totals as the Fords downed
visiting Washington College, 67-62, in a Centennial Conference
men's basketball game on Wednesday night at Gooding Arena. The
Fords improved to 3-2 overall and 1-0 in conference play with the
win, while the Shoremen fell to 2-3 and 0-1 respectively with the
loss.
With the Shoremen holding a 47-45 lead with 8:37
left in the game, the hosts scored the next 10 points to take a
55-47 lead with 5:04 left as Cameron Baker scored
on a layup to cap the run. After a three by sophomore guard
Sal Schittino (Ellicott City, MD/Loyola
Blakefield) to cut the lead to 55-50, the Fords scored the
next six points to lead 61-50 with 3:28 to go on a Baker fast break
layup to give Haverford its biggest lead of the game. Sophomore
guard Mark DeBoy (Baltimore, MD/Mount St. Joseph)
would answer with his sixth triple of the night to trim the lead to
61-53 with 2:50 left. Sophomore guard Kevin Breslin
(Hagerstown, MD/St. Maria Goretti) drained a shot from
behind the arc to cut the Fords lead to five at 61-56 with 2:14
remaining. Baker extended the lead back to seven at 63-56 on a
breakaway layup with 2:11 left. DeBoy netted a bank shot jumper
with 54.8 ticks left to trim the hosts lead to 63-58. Haverford
made one-of-two from the line to go up 64-58, but senior
guard/forward Andrew Chambers (Williamsport, MD/St. Maria
Goretti) made two free throws to cut the lead to 64-60
with 38 seconds to go. Haverford made one from the line to extend
the lead to 65-60 with 29 ticks left. Both teams scored two points
the rest of the way to provide the final margin at 67-62.
In the first half, with the score tied at 10-10,
the Shoremen scored five quick points on a layup by Chambers and a
three-pointer by DeBoy. DeBoy would connect on two more triples to
give Washington a 21-18 lead with 8:39 left in the first as he
scored nine straight points. The Fords responded with an 8-3 run to
take a 26-24 lead with 2:46 left in the half. The Shoremen closed
out the first half scoring eight of the final ten 10 points take a
32-28 lead into halftime. DeBoy closed out the first half on a
steal and fastbreak layup with three ticks left in the opening 20
minutes.
Washington shot 52 percent from the floor and 56
percent from three-point range in the first half, while Haverford
was 42 percent and 33 percent respectively.
Haverford jumped out to a 37-34 lead in the first
3:28 of the second half on a 9-2 spurt. Bo
Friddell put the Fords back into the lead when he canned a
trifecta. DeBoy would tie the game at 39-39 on his fourth
three-pointer of the game. The score would remain tied at 39-39
until a jumper by Schittino with 11:50 left to put WC back up
41-39. The Fords responded with a second chance hoop by
Doug Edelman to tie the game back up at 41-41 on
the next possession. DeBoy hit his fifth three of the night with
10:46 to go to put the guests back up 44-41. The Fords would net
four free throws to regain the lead at 45-44 with 9:20 to go.
Schittino answered with a three to put WC back up 47-45 with 8:37
to go.
Friddel scored 17 points to lead the Fords, while
Sam Permutt scored 16 and Baker netted 15 points.
Edelman had a double-double with 12 points and a game-high 10
rebounds. Baker led all players with five steals in the game.
DeBoy led all players with a career-high 22 points
on 8-for-9 shooting, including 6-for-7 from three-point range.
Breslin chipped in with 13 points, while Chambers chipped in with
10 points and a team-best seven rebounds. Sophomore forward
Christian Matthews (Swarthmore, PA/Strath Haven)
blocked a game-high and career-high three shots.
Washington shot 44 percent from the field for the
game, while Haverford shot 42 percent from the floor. WC was
11-for-23 from behind the arc, while Haverford was just 3-for-9.
Haverford got the free throw line 35 times, connecting on 18, while
WC was 5-for-7 from the charity stripe. The Fords held the edge in
points in the paint (30-14), points off turnovers (17-16) and
second chance points (15-6). The Shoremen held a 33-7 advantage in
bench points.
The Shoremen return to action Saturday with a 2:00
p.m. Centennial Conference road tilt at Muhlenberg.
