Box Score Chambers Nets 17 Points in Victory
CARLISLE, PA – Senior guard/forward
Andrew Chambers (Williamsport, MD/St. Maria
Goretti) had team-highs of 17 points and seven rebounds
along with a game-high three steals, while sophomore guard/forward
Kevin Breslin (Hagerstown, MD/St. Maria Goretti)
scored 15 points as visiting Washington College held off host
Dickinson College, 59-55, on Tuesday night at the Kline Center in
Centennial Conference men's basketball action. The Shoremen improve
to 5-5 overall and 3-3 in the Centennial, while the Red Devils fall
to 1-11 and 0-6 respectively.
With the Shoremen nursing a 55-53 lead with a
minute to go in the second half, Breslin hit one of two from the
free throw line to put WC up 56-53 with 31 seconds left.
Chris Barsanti was fouled with 19 seconds
remaining and hit both from the foul line to cut the Washington
lead to 56-55. Breslin was fouled with 14 ticks to go and canned
both from the charity stripe to put the visitors back up three at
58-55. On Dickinson's next trip down the floor, Chris
Heine launched a three-pointer with six seconds to go, but
it was off the mark and the Shoremen got the rebound. Chambers was
fouled and hit one of two from the line with two seconds left to
provide the final margin.
In the first half, Washington jumped out to a 13-8
lead with 11:49 to go in the first half on a jumper by sophomore
guard Sal Schittino (Ellicott City, MD/Loyola
Blakefield) before Dickinson hit the visitors with a 9-0
run over the next 2:26 to take a 17-13 lead with 9:23 left in the
first following a pair of free throws by Barsanti. During the run,
the Red Devils were a perfect 5-for-5 from the charity stripe. The
hosts would extend their lead to five points on two occasions, but
the Shoremen tied the game at 26-26 with 95 seconds remaining in
the first half on a three-pointer by Schittino. The Shoremen got
two free throws from Chambers with four ticks left in the half to
take a 29-28 lead into halftime. The Red Devils did get one last
chance at a score after the free throws, but they missed the layup
as time expired.
In the second half, Dickinson scored on its first
four possessions, on its way to an 11-2 run to take a 39-31 lead
just 4:37 into the second half on a lay-in by Matt
Dolan. However, Washington turned the tables with a 9-0
burst to retake the lead at 40-39 with 13:41 to go in the contest
on a layup by Breslin. After both teams went scoreless for two
minutes, sophomore guard Mark DeBoy (Baltimore, MD/Mount
St. Joseph) canned a triple to put the visitors up 43-39
with 11:37 remaining that concluded a 12-0 run for WC. Dickinson's
Chris Harrington netted a jumper to even the game
at 43-43 with 10:27 to go, but the Shoremen countered with six
consecutive points to take a 49-43 lead with 8:11 to go on a
Chambers layup. After a Dickinson score, Schittino drained a
trifecta to put the Shoremen up 52-45 with 6:47 to go. Following a
Chambers three to put WC up 55-48 with 4:05 to go that capped a
12-5 run, Dickinson netted five unanswered points to cut the
guests' lead to 55-53 with 1:05 left on a free throw by Dolan.
For the Shoremen, Schittino joined Chambers and
Breslin in double-figures in points with 10, while senior guard
Scott Hampton (Colts Neck, NJ/Colts Neck) dished
out a team-high four assists. The Shoremen shot 36% from the floor
(20-for-55), 38% from three-point range (8-for-21) and 65% from the
free throw line (11-for-17).
For the Red Devils, Barsanti totaled game-highs 20
points and five assists, while Dolan chalked up a double-double
with 16 points and led all players with 13 rebounds. Dickinson shot
43% from the field (18-for-42), 40% from three-point territory
(4-for-10) and 75% from the charity stripe (15-for-20). Dickinson
held a 34-30 edge on the boards.
Washington forced 23 Dickinson turnovers which
resulted in 23 points for the Shoremen, while the Red Devils got 17
points off of 14 Shoremen turnovers. Dickinson held a 26-12 edge in
points in the paint, while Washington enjoyed a 21-8 edge on bench
points. Both teams had 10 second chance points.
The Shoremen will return to action on Thursday
evening with an 8:00 p.m. game at Franklin & Marshall in
Centennial Conference action.
