Box Score Chambers Scores 22 Points in Loss
WESTMINSTER, MD – Host McDaniel College got a
team-high 18 points from Miguel Jones as the Green
Terror scored a 73-70 overtime Centennial Conference men's
basketball victory over visiting Washington College on Saturday
afternoon at the Gill Center. The Green Terror improved to 8-8
overall and 4-5 in conference play with the win, while the Shoremen
slipped to 8-6 and 6-4 with the loss. The loss snaps Washington's
four-game winning streak.
In overtime, the hosts netted the first five points
to grab a 67-62 lead with 3:34 left in the extra session on a
Marcus Dyson bucket. The Shoremen would make three
free throws to trim the Green Terror's lead to 67-65 with 2:43 to
go. Dyson would make a jumper to increase the McDaniel lead to
69-65 with 1:36 left. On Washington's next trip down the floor,
sophomore guard Sal Schittino (Ellicott City, MD/Loyola
Blakefield) canned a three to reduce the McDaniel lead to
69-68 with 70 seconds to go. Jones was fouled on the next
possession and hit both from the free throw line to make it 71-68
with 41 ticks to go. With 12 seconds left, Jones hit one free throw
to make it 72-68. Senior guard/forward Andrew Chambers
(Williamsport, MD/St. Maria Goretti) would net both free
throws to trim the lead to 72-70 with six ticks left. Jones would
go to the line two seconds later and hit one of two from the
charity stripe to increase the McDaniel lead to 73-70. Washington's
three-point chance to send the game to a second overtime period was
off and the four-game winning streak comes to an end.
McDaniel entered the second half with a three-point
lead at 29-26. The Green Terror opened up the frame on a 13-6 run
to take a 42-32 lead with 16:39 left in the contest on a
three-pointer by Michael Jarboe. WC would counter
with a 13-2 run to grab a 45-44 lead with 9:28 to go in the contest
on a free throw by sophomore guard Sal Schittino (Ellicott
City, MD/Loyola Blakefield). The Shoremen took a 52-49
lead with 6:41 left on a transition layup off of a steal by
sophomore Kevin Breslin (Hagerstown, MD/St. Maria Goretti). On
McDaniel's next possession, Michael McClain scored
on a traditional three-point play to knot the game at 52-52 with
6:13 left. The two teams would trade baskets on four occasions and
the score was tied 60-60 with 1:38 left. The Green Terror took a
62-60 lead with 22 seconds left on a jumper in the paint by Jones.
On the next possession, Breslin drew the foul with seven seconds
left and hit both free throws to level the contest at 62-62.
Washington would force a McDaniel turnover and had a chance to win
it, but the short jumper was off the mark with two ticks left and
the game went to overtime.
In the first half, the Shoremen led 4-2, before the
Green Terror scored seven consecutive points to take a 9-4 lead
with 14:06 left in the opening stanza on a Jarboe fast-break lay-in
following a steal by Jarboe. Woody Butler would
give McDaniel a 17-12 lead on a slam dunk, but Washington responded
with an 8-2 run to take a 20-19 lead with 5:33 left in the first on
a three-pointer by sophomore guard Mark DeBoy (Baltimore,
MD/Mt. St. Joseph). McDaniel trailed 24-23 with 3:27 left,
but scored six of the last eight points of the half to take a 29-26
lead at halftime.
For the hosts who had five players tally double
figures in points, Butler, Jarboe and McClain all scored 12 points
in the win. Dyson had a game-best 10 rebounds to go with 10 points
to record a double-double, while tallying a team-best three steals.
Jarboe handed out eight assists to lead all players. The Green
Terror held a 42-28 edge on the boards and shot 51% from the floor.
Chambers scored a game-best 22 points in the
setback for the Shoremen and took down a team-best eight rebounds.
Breslin netted 17 points and led all participants with four steals
for WC, while senior forward Alan Kines (Towson,
MD/Towson) added 15 points. Washington turned the ball
over just 10 times, while forcing McDaniel into 16 turnovers.
Washington shot 41% from the floor in the contest.
McDaniel held the edge in points in the paint
(38-34), points off turnovers (16-13) and bench points (15-12),
while Washington held a slim edge in second chance points (8-7).
Both teams netted four points apiece on the fast-break.
The Shoremen return to action Wednesday with a 8:00
p.m. Centennial Conference clash at Ursinus.
