Box Score CHESTERTOWN, MD -- Fourth-ranked Ursinus College
scored five times in the second half of a 6-0 Centennial Conference
field hockey win over host Washington College tonight on Kibler
Field at Roy Kirby, Jr. Stadium. Alyssa Thren
scored the final four goals of the game for the Bears, who improved
to 11-1 overall and 7-0 in conference play with the win.
Jennifer Bayzick scored on the first
shot of the game, 20 seconds in, to give the Bears a 1-0 lead. That
goal was the only score of the first half, however, as Washington
(5-7, 3-2) allowed just four more shots in the period while taking
seven.
Ursinus scored its second goal on a penalty stroke
with 30:17 left in the second half. The stroke was initially taken
by Bayzick and was seemingly saved by Washington senior goalkeeper
Shannon Davis (Sykesville, MD/Liberty), but the
officials determined the stroke was taken from the wrong marking on
the field and the Bears were allowed to take the stroke
again. This time, Michelle Wimmer found the
back of the cage.
After the penalty stroke, Thren scored the next four
goals for the Bears, the first three in a span of 5:05. She scored
off a rebound with 26:29 left, scored in front og the goal with
26:06 remaining, and knocked in another rebound with 21:24 to play.
Thren netted her fourth goal of the game when she lofted in a high
shot off a corner from Bayzick with 13:26 remaining.
The Bears held a 14-3 advantage in shots in the
second half for a 19-10 advantage for the game. Their fewest
shots in a conference game this season prior to tonight was 27,
while their most shots allowed in a conference game this season
prior to tonight was eight.
LauraLee Lightwood-Mater had seven
saves in the shutout for the Bears, while Davis finished with nine
saves for the Shorewomen. Washington junior defender
Brittany Palasik (Severna Park, MD/Archbishop
Spalding) extended her own single-season school record
with her conference-leading 13th defensive save of the season.
Sophomore defender Erin Lewns (Fallston, MD/North
Harford) also had a defensive save for the Shorewomen.
The Shorewomen return to action Saturday with a 1:00
p.m. Centennial Conference home game against Gettysburg.
