Box Score Phipps Surpasses 300 Career Saves for
Shoremen
CHESTERTOWN, MD -- Visiting Gettysburg College scored three
times in the final 30 minutes to pull away from host Washington
College en route to a 4-1 Centennial Conference men's soccer
victory tonight on Kibler Field at Roy Kirby, Jr.
Stadium.
Neither team got on the scoreboard in the first half as the
Bullets (4-7-1, 3-2-1 Centennial) held a slim 7-6 advantage in
shots in the period.
Teddy Smith got the Bullets on the board when
he booted in a goal off a pass from Tyler Shaffer
at 49:21. The Shoremen (3-9-1, 0-5-1) evened things up when
sophomore midfielder Justin Geho (Westminster, MD/Cardinal
Gibbons) scored on a free kick at 56:02.
Gettysburg scored what would prove to be the game-winner at
60:09 as Smith sent a free kick to Eric Hynes, who
headed the ball in. Hynes assisted on the Bullets' third goal when
he passed back to Calum Benjamin in transition at
68:40. Andrew McGuire rounded out the scoring with
a goal in transition off an assist from Teddy
McCarthy at 79:31.
Junior goalkeeper Chris Phipps (Newark, DE/St.
Mark's) made nine saves for the Shoremen. His third save
of the game - at the 18:51 mark - was the 300th of his career. He
is the fifth goalkeeper in Washington College men's soccer history
to reach that mark. Connor Darrell made six saves
for the Bullets.
Gettysburg finished the game with a 19-15 advantage in shots and
a 3-2 edge in corner kicks.
The Shoremen are back in action Wednesday with a 7:00 p.m.
non-conference home game against Wesley.
