Palasik Breaks School Record with Five Defensive Saves in Single Game

CHESTERTOWN, MD - Sarah Wister converted a penalty stroke 8:01 into the first overtime period to give eighth-ranked Christopher Newport a 3-2 non-conference field hockey win over host Washington College this afternoon on Kibler Field at Roy Kirby, Jr. Stadium. The Captains (9-1) rallied from an early 2-0 deficit to get the win. Junior defender Brittany Palasik (Severna Park, MD/Archbishop Spalding) broke a single-game school record with five defensive saves in the loss for the Shorewomen (5-4). 

Sophomore attack Hillary Kane (Rhinebeck, NY/Millbrook School) gave the Shorewomen a 1-0 lead exactly seven minutes into the game when she deflected in a long blast from junior midfielder Gussie Reilly (Buck Hill Falls, PA/Mercersburg Academy). Reilly made it 2-0 in favor of the Shorewomen when she scored off an assist from junior attack Emily Trees (Kensington, MD/Connelly School of the Holy Child) with 19:45 remaining in the first half.

Christopher Newport rallied to tie the score before halftime as Katelyn Yandle scored on a diving loose ball in the circle with 12:08 left in the period and evened the score when she tipped in a blast from Caitlin Cahill with 1:06 on the clock.  

Wister's penalty stroke was the Captains' fourth shot of overtime as she placed it in the right side of the cage. 

Palasik's five defensive saves broke the single-game record of four, recorded three times - mostly recently by Eleanor Shriver in 1992.  It also boosted her total this season to 10 defensive saves, one shy of the single-season school record. 

The Captains held a 17-12 advantage in shots and a 13-12 edge in penalty corners in the game.  Brittany Bradsher made nine saves in the cage for the Captains.

The Shorewomen are back in action Wednesday with a 4:00 p.m. non-conference game at Mary Washington.
