BALTIMORE, MD - Host Johns Hopkins University scored
three first-half goals on penalty corners en route to a 3-1
Centennial Conference field hockey victory over visiting Washington
College this afternoon in Baltimore, MD.
The Blue Jays (6-4, 4-1 Centennial) got on the
scoreboard early Lindsay McKenna scored from the
the left of the goal just 3:53 into the contest. Hopkins
nearly made it 2-0 with 25:15 left in the first half, but WC senior
goalkeeper Shannon Davis (Sykesville, MD/Liberty)
saved a penalty stroke by Ariana Branchini. The
Blue Jays got their second goal with 13:34 left in the period when
Olivia Ross tipped in a shot by Jennifer
Motylinski at the left post. The third Blue Jay goal
of the period came with 6:07 on the clock on a well-executed direct
penalty corner. Carly Bianco played the ball in to
Motylinski, who acted as a stick-stop to set up a blast by
Branchini.
Hopkins built its 3-0 halftime lead despite being
outshot, 17-15, in the first half and trailing the Shorewomen, 6-5,
in penalty corners in the period.
Washington controlled most of the second half, but
Hopkins kept the Shorewomen off the scoreboard until junior attack
Emily Trees (Kensington, MD/Connelly School of the Holy
Child) scored in transition with three seconds left.
Kim Stein made six saves for the Blue Jays in the
first eight and one-half minutes of the second half to withstand a
furious opening to the period by the Washington offense.
Stein finished with a total of 11 saves in the win
for Hopkins. Davis finished with a career-high 10 saves for the
Shorewomen.
Washington finished with a 29-25 advantage in shots
and a 14-8 edge in penulty corners in the game.
The Shorewomen (5-6, 3-1) return to action Wednesday
with a 7:00 p.m. Centennial Conference home game against
fifth-ranked Ursinus.
