Box Score Breslin Scores Career-High 22 Points in
Loss
CHESTERTOWN, MD – All five Haverford starters
scored in double figures as the visiting Fords posted an 80-75 win
over host Washington College in Centennial Conference men's
basketball action tonight inside Cain Athletic Center. The Fords
improved to 7-12 overall and 5-8 in conference play with the win,
while the Shoremen slipped to 9-8 and 7-6.
Haverford held the Shoremen to 33% shooting in the
first half and took a 35-22 lead into the intermission. The
Shoremen went on an 8-0 run with less than seven minutes left in
the game to get within six points and 62-56, but Haverford answered
by scoring the next five points to build the margin to 67-56 on a
Doug Edelman lay-up with 3:10 to play.
The Fords held a nine-point lead after a pair of
Ian Goldberg free throws made it 71-62 with 1:06
left. Washington got back to within six points with 30 seconds to
go following a lay-up by sophomore guard/forward Kevin
Breslin (Hagerstown, MD/St. Maria Goretti) which made it
72-66. The Fords made all eight of their free throws in the final
30 seconds, however, to seal the win. Washington hit three
three-pointers in the final 15 seconds, the last by Breslin with
just over one second remaining to cut the lead to 78-75, but
Matthew Palmer hit a pair of free throws with 0.8
seconds left to provide the final margin.
Sam Permutt led the balanced Fords
with 20 points and 11 rebounds, while Goldberg netted 16 points and
Palmer finished with 15 points and four assists. Bo
Friddell added 12 points and eight boards, while
Cameron Baker scored 11 points for Haverford.
The Fords shot 51.1% from the field in the game and
27-of-36 (75%) from the line. Haverford entered the game shooting
less than 60% from the charity stripe as a team. Palmer entered the
contest shooting 48.6% from the free-throw line, but knocked down
eight of his 10 free throws on the night.
Breslin led the Shoremen with a career-high 22
points to lead all scorers. He also dished out four assists. Senior
guard/forward Andrew Chambers (Williamsport, MD/St. Maria
Goretti) added 15 points and four steals, while senior
forward Alan Kines (Towson, MD/Towson) scored 13
points and grabbed eight caroms.
Washington shot 48.5% from the field in the second
half to finish at 41.3% for the game. The Shoremen committed seven
fewer turnovers than the Fords (13 to 20).
The Shoremen return to action Saturday with a 2:00
p.m. Centennial Conference home game against Dickinson.
