Box Score Chambers Tallies Career High in Steals with
Six
CHESTERTOWN, MD – Host Washington College got
game-bests of 16 points and a career-high six steals from senior
guard/forward Andrew Chambers (Williamsport, MD/St. Maria
Goretti) as host Washington College topped visiting
Dickinson College, 60-50, in a Centennial Conference men's
basketball game this evening in Cain Athletic Center. The Shoremen
(10-8, 8-6 Centennial) completed a season sweep of the Red Devils
(2-17, 2-12) for the second straight year with the win.
Dickinson led by five points at 23-18 with 8:39 in
the first half following a three-pointer by Chris
Heine to take its biggest lead of the night for the second
time. Washington responded with a 17-5 run to take a 35-28 lead
into halftime. Chambers, who scored 11 of the 17 points in the run,
began the run with two free throws with 7:29 to go in the first.
The Shoremen tied the game at 24-24 with 5:40 left in the stanza on
a jumper by junior guard Dylan Bernstein (Laytonsville,
MD/Gaithersburg). Following scores by each team, the
Shoremen took the lead for good with 3:52 left in the opening half
on a fast-break layup by sophomore guard Doug Holcombe
(Medford, NJ/Shawnee) on a pass from Bernstein. Chambers
scored the last five points of the half for the hosts on a triple
and a jumper in the paint.
In the second half, the Shoremen took their first
double-digit lead of the night at 43-33 with 17:46 remaining in the
contest on a free throw by sophomore guard/forward Kevin
Breslin (Hagerstown, MD/St. Maria Goretti). The Shoremen
expanded the lead to 16 points on two occasions, the final one
coming with 8:32 left on a jumper by sophomore guard Sal
Schittino (Ellicott City, MD/Loyola Blakefield) to put WC
up 53-37. The Red Devils would cut it to eight points on two
occasions, but would draw no closer as the Shoremen went 7-for-8
from the charity stripe in the final 90 ticks to hold on for the
win.
Chambers netted his 16 points on 5-for-6 shooting
from the floor, including going 2-for-3 from three-point range,
along with 4-for-5 from the free throw stripe. Breslin added 14
points in the victory for Washington and led all players with five
assists. Senior forward Alan Kines (Towson,
MD/Towson) had a game-topping two blocks and a team-best
six rebounds. Senior guard Scott Hampton (Colts Neck,
NJ/Colts Neck) totaled four steals. The Shoremen forced 29
Dickinson turnovers, while committing just 15 themsevles, and
netted 23 points off of the Red Devil miscues.
Matt Dolan netted a double-double
14 points and a game-best 13 rebounds for the Red Devils. Dolan
tallied double-doubles in both games against the Shoremen this
season. Chris Harrington scored a team-best 15
points in the setback for Dickinson, while Chris
Barsanti had three assists to lead the guests. The Red
Devils enjoyed a 39-28 edge on the boards and got six points off of
Washington's 15 turnovers.
Dickinson held the edge in points in the paint
(22-20) and bench points (29-22), while the Washington netted all
11 fast-break points in the game. Both squads had six points in
second chance opportunties.
The Shoremen shot 36% from the floor, 23% from
three-point range and 70% from the line in the win, while the Red
Devils shot 35% from the field, 36% from behind the arc and 73% at
the stripe.
The Shoremen are scheduled to return to action
Wednesday with a 8:00 p.m. Centennial Conference road tilt at
Swarthmore.
