LANCASTER, PA -- Visiting Washington College and
host Franklin & Marshall split a Centennial Conference softball
double-header on Saturday afternoon. Washington won game one by an
8-4 score, while F&M rallied to win the nightcap, 5-3. The
Shorewomen are now 6-4 overall and 1-1 in the Centennial, while the
Diplomats are 1-3 and 1-1 respectively.
In game one, the Shorewomen took a 2-0 lead in the
top of the first when sophomore Sally Snover (Charlotte,
NC/Myers Park) cracked a two-run triple and would come
around to score on a sacrifice fly off the bat of freshman
Lindsey Glascock (Glenwood, MD/Glenelg) to put WC
up 3-0. The Diplomats would score three runs of their own in the
bottom of the first to level the game at 3-3. Caitlin Elfring hit a
two-run double to trim the Washington to 3-2 and F&M would even
the score when she scored on a Shorewomen error.
Sophomore Leigh Carbutt (Collegeville,
PA/Perkiomen Valley) gave the Shorewomen the lead back at
4-3 in the top of the second when she scored on a throwing error,
but the Diplomats tied the game again at 4-4 when Danielle
Murphy scored on a fielder's choice.
The Shorewomen took the lead for good in the top of
the third when sophomore Margaret Rohde (Highland Lakes,
NJ/Academy of Home Education) crossed the dish on an RBI
groundout off the bat of freshman Shaelan Nottingham (Ocean
City, MD/Stephen Decatur). Washington added three runs in
the top of the fifth to provide the final margin. Freshman
Laura Wagoner (Phoenixville, PA/Agnes Irwin
School) plated two on a double to center and scored on a
two-bagger off the stick of Becca Nicely (Baltimore,
MD/Institute of Notre Dame). The Diplomats loaded the
bases in the bottom of the frame with one out, but a force play at
the plate and pop out quelched the threat.
For WC in the opener, Nottingham went 3-for-4 with
an RBI and a run scored. Carbutt, Rohde and Snover each added two
hits with Carbutt and Rohde scoring twice and Snover driving in two
runs. Sophomore pitcher Meaghan Kimme (Lumberton, NJ/Holy
Cross) tallied the win to improve to 3-1 on the year. She
struck out a career eight batters in the triumph.
Elfring and Alyssa Yackle each
totaled two hits in the opener for F&M, with Elfring driving in
three runs. Murphy scored two runs for the Diplomats. In the
circle, Liz Chudzik took the loss and falls to
0-2. She went 4.2 innings, surrendering all eight runs, seven of
which were earned. She gave 11 of Washington's 13 hits.
In game two, Snover put WC up 1-0 in the top of the
first on a home run to left field, but F&M tied it in its half
of the frame on a fielder's choice to plated Murphy.
The Shorewomen took a 3-1 lead in the top of the
third on a Snover sacrifice fly that scored Carbutt and Tryhubenko
crossed the plate on a wild pitch. The lead would hold until a
three-run bottom of the fifth by F&M gave the hosts a 4-3 lead.
All three runs scored after the first two batters were retired.
Chudzik cut it to 3-2 on a double and Kelly
Marchisio drove in Chudzik to knot the game at 3-3.
Marchisio scored the game-winning run on a single off the bat of
Sara Damato.
Elfring singled in Megan Pauley in
the bottom of the sixth with two away to provide the final margin.
WC got the tying run to the plate in the top of the seventh, but a
pop out ended the contest.
For F&M, Chudzik and Pauley each tallied two
hits, with Marchisio driving in two runs. Damato picked up the win
in the circle, allowing just six hits and three runs in going the
distance.
In the second game for WC, sophomore Jordan
Tryhubenko (Cockeysville, MD/Dulaney) went 2-for-3 with a
