Papen Clinches Match with Win at No. 2 Singles
CHESTERTOWN, MD -- Host Washington College downed
visiting Gettysburg, 8-1, in a Centennial Conference men's tennis
match this afternoon at Schottland Tennis Center. The Shoremen
improved to 6-1 overall and 2-0 in conference play with the win,
while the Bullets fell to 5-3 and 0-1 with the loss.
Washington swept doubles to take a 3-0 lead in the
match. Junior Adam Cranford (Bel Air, MD/John
Carroll) and sophomore Kevin Papen (Dover,
DE/Caesar Rodney) downed Dale Beshore and
Mike McLaughlin, 8-4, and junior Andrew
Laux (Mt. Sinai, NY/Mt. Sinai) and senior Timothy
Parks (Geneva, Switzerland/College du Leman) bested
Terry Keegan and Sebastian
Rodriguez, 8-4, at No. 2. Sophomore Aaron Ellison
(Largo, FL/St. Petersburg) and sophomore John
Menzione (Chadds Ford, PA/Kennett) completed the sweep
with an 8-6 triumph over Chris Curran and
Kevin Raynes at No. 3.
In singles, Ellison beat Keegan, 6-1, 6-2, at No. 3
to give the Shoremen a 4-0 lead, while Papen clinched the match
with a 6-1, 6-2, win over Beshore at No. 2. Gettysburg's lone point
came at No. 4 as McLaughlin bested sophomore Kyle Lisco
(Toms River, NJ/Toms River North), 6-1, 6-3. Cranford
downed Curran, 7-5, 6-2, at No. 1, Laux beat Rodriguez, 8-2, at No.
5, and Menzione topped Raynes, 8-1, at No. 6 to round out singles.
The Shoremen return to action Tuesday with a 3:00
p.m. home match against St. Mary's (MD).
