Box Score 2 Carbutt Hits Home Run in
Opener
GETTYSBURG, PA -- Host Gettysburg College took both
ends of a doubleheader against visiting Washington College in a
Centennial Conference softball doubleheader on Saturday afternoon
at Bobby Jones Field. The Bullets (14-11-1, 6-4 Centennial) won
game one, 5-2, over the Shorewomen (10-14, 3-7 Centennial) and won
game two by a 5-0 count.
In game one, Joy Hallfors reached
on a bunt single, but the throw to first got away allowing Hallfors
to come all the way around to score to give the Bullets a 1-0 lead
in the bottom of the third. The Shorewomen tied it at 1-1 in the
top of the fourth when freshman Laura Wagoner
(Phoenixville, PA/Agnes Irwin School) doubled in fellow
classmate Shaelan Nottingham (Ocean City, MD/Stephen
Decatur).
Gettysburg took control of the opener with a
three-run bottom of the fourth. Sam Bader drove in Catrina DelGais
on a two-bagger to put the hosts up for good at 2-1. Bader scored
on a single by Caitlin Bay to extend the lead to
3-1. Bay scored on a RBI single by Hallforsto make it 4-1 to close
out the scoring in the frame.
Sophomore Leigh Carbutt (Collegeville,
PA/Perkiomen Valley) cut the deficit to 4-2 when she hit
her third home run of the season to left field in the top of the
fifth. In the bottom of the frame, DelGais drove in Sarah
Woodbury on a double to make it 5-2 and close the
scoring.
Hallfors had three hits to lead all players, while
Bader and DelGais each chalked up two hits. Lanie Parr picked up
the win in the circle for Gettysburg as she went the distance to go
to 8-3. For Washington, freshman Brittany Walter (Forest
Hill, MD/C. Milton Wright) took the loss and falls to
4-9.
In game two, Megan Lott drove in
Hallfors on an RBI double to make it 1-0 in the bottom of the
first. Bay tripled in Bader in the bottom of the second to increase
the Bullets' lead to 2-0. Lott scored on a fielding error in the
bottom of the fifth to give Gettysburg a 3-0 cushion. The hosts
added the final two runs in the bottom of the sixth on a fielding
error by the Shorewomen.
Bay and Woodbury both had two hits to pace the
Gettysburg offense in the nightcap. In the circle for the hosts,
Beth McCullough tossed a three-hit complete game
shutout and striking out four to improve to 5-8. For the
Shorewomen, sophomore Meaghan Kimme (Lumberton, NJ/Holy
Cross) took the loss and falls to 5-5.
The Shorewomen return to action Tuesday with a 3:00
p.m. Centennial Conference doubleheader at Swarthmore.
