WC Records 10 Wins for Third Straight
Year
CHESTERTOWN, MD -- The Washington College women's
tennis team defeated visiting Ursinus College, 7-2, in a Centennial
Conference match this afternoon inside the Lifetime Fitness Center.
The Shorewomen improved to 10-3 overall and 5-2 in conference play
with the win, while the Bears fell to 6-9 and 2-6.
Ursinus took a 1-0 lead when Christina
Lippe and Chelsea Carman completed an 8-1
win at No. 3 doubles against freshman Kat Cohen
(Springfield, MA/Williston-Northampton School) and
freshman Kelsey Mills (Cambridge, MD/Cambridge-South
Dorchester). The Shorewomen evened the score with a win at
No. 2 doubles where senior Kellie Foster (Lothian, MD/St.
Mary's) and freshman Campbell McNicol (Mill Neck,
NY/St. George's School) were 8-1 winners against
Jimena Talavera and Jessica
Tyrrell. Washington took the lead following an 8-4 victory
at No. 1 by sophomore Jordan Finnegan (Wilmington,
DE/Archmere Academy) and sophomore Brittany Marshall (Dagsboro, DE/Worcester Prep, MD) against
Jenna Hope and Julia Kurtz.
Washington's lead grew to 3-1 with McNicol's 6-1,
6-0, win over Tyrrell at No. 4. Finnegan followed with a 6-0, 6-1,
victory against Hope at No. 1 and Marshall clinched the match with
a 6-0, 6-0, victory against Kurtz at No. 2. Foster defeated
Talavera, 6-1, 6-1, at No. 4 to make the score 6-1. Carman picked
up the Bears' lone singles win with an 8-2 win over Mills at No. 6.
Cohen accounted for the final point of the match with an 8-5 win
against Leah Stambaugh at No. 5.
The win for the Shorewomen gave them at least 10
victories for the third consecutive season for just the second time
in team history. Washington won at least 10 matches every year from
1989-1992.
The Shorewomen return to action Saturday with a
3:00 p.m. Centennial Conference match at 13th-ranked Johns
Hopkins.
