Walter Goes The Distance in Game One Win

CHESTERTOWN, MD -- Visiting Dickinson College and host Washington College split a Centennial Conference softball doubleheader on Saturday afternoon at Washington College Softball Field. The Shorewomen (11-15, 4-8 CC) won game one, 6-2, while the Red Devils (14-15, 7-5 Centennial) won game two, 4-1.

In the first game, the Shorewomen got on the board first in the bottom of the second courtesy of an unearned run. Freshman Laura Wagoner (Phoenixville, PA/Agnes Irwin School) reached on a throwing error with one out. She would steal second base and advanced to third base on a groundout. Wagoner would score on a passed ball to give WC the 1-0 lead after two frames. Washington pushed the lead to 2-0 in the bottom of the third on a RBI double to right-center by sophomore Margaret Rohde (Highland Lakes, NJ/Academy of Home Education) that knocked in freshman Shaelan Nottingham (Ocean City, MD/Stephen Decatur).

The Shorewomen broke open the game with four-run fourth inning. Freshman pitcher Brittany Walter (Forest Hill, MD/C. Milton Wright) singled in sophomore Kristine Cunningham (Levittown, NY/Island Trees) to make it 3-0. Walter would score on a safety squeeze off the bat of sophomore Leigh Carbutt (Collegeville, PA/Perkiomen Valley) to push the lead to 4-0. Sophomore Sally Snover (Charlotte, NC/Myers Park) extended the cushion to 6-0 when she scorched a double down the right field line that plated two.

Dickinson scored twice in the top of the fifth to cut the lead to 6-2. With the bases loaded and one out, Melissa Osborn put the ball in play and was booted by the Shorewoman fielder which allowed two Dickinson runners to score. Walter would retire the next two Red Devil hitters to prevent any further damage and there would be no more scoring in the opener.

Walter chalked up the win for WC in the circle and improves to 5-9. She struck out four batters in going the distance, allowed just one earned run and scattered nine hits. At the plate, she went 2-for-3 with a run scored and an RBI. Sophomore Jordan Tryhubenko (Cockeysville, MD/Dulaney) had two hits and Snover registered two RBI.

For the Red Devils, Kyrie Budnik, Emma Murtaugh and Mary Kate Flannery all tallied two hits. In the circle Liz Barry took the loss and falls to 3-8 as she allowed six runs, but just two of them earned in four innings of work.

In game two, Washington grabbed a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first when Carbutt scored on a bunt squeeze play by Snover with Snover beating the throw to record an RBI hit. Dickinson would tie the contest at 1-1 in the top of the third when Budnik singled in Jess Haklar from second base.

In the top of the fifth, the Red Devils grabbed a 2-1 lead on a two out single by Alesha Sisco through the left side that plated Flannery. In the top of the sixth with two away, Budnik hit a two-run single up the middle to give the guests a 4-1 bulge. In the bottom half of the sixth, WC had runners at first and third with no outs and second and third with one away, but could not score.

For Dickinson, Allison Jordan got the complete game win and improves to 7-3. She scattered seven hits, allowed only one unearned run and struck out 11. Budnik went 2-for-4 with three RBI in the win for the Red Devils. Sisco went 2-for-4 with an RBI, while Ari Coulter went 2-for-4 with a run scored.

Sophomore Meaghan Kimme (Lumberton, NJ/Holy Cross) took the loss and falls to 5-6. She allowed just two earned runs in tossing a complete game. At the dish, Snover had two hits and WC's lone RBI in the nightcap.
