Box Score 2 Walter Goes The Distance in Game One Win
CHESTERTOWN, MD -- Visiting Dickinson College and
host Washington College split a Centennial Conference softball
doubleheader on Saturday afternoon at Washington College Softball
Field. The Shorewomen (11-15, 4-8 CC) won game one, 6-2, while the
Red Devils (14-15, 7-5 Centennial) won game two, 4-1.
In the first game, the Shorewomen got on the board
first in the bottom of the second courtesy of an unearned run.
Freshman Laura Wagoner (Phoenixville, PA/Agnes Irwin
School) reached on a throwing error with one out. She
would steal second base and advanced to third base on a groundout.
Wagoner would score on a passed ball to give WC the 1-0 lead after
two frames. Washington pushed the lead to 2-0 in the bottom of the
third on a RBI double to right-center by sophomore Margaret Rohde (Highland Lakes, NJ/Academy of Home Education) that
knocked in freshman Shaelan Nottingham (Ocean City,
MD/Stephen Decatur).
The Shorewomen broke open the game with four-run
fourth inning. Freshman pitcher Brittany Walter (Forest
Hill, MD/C. Milton Wright) singled in sophomore
Kristine Cunningham (Levittown, NY/Island Trees)
to make it 3-0. Walter would score on a safety squeeze off the bat
of sophomore Leigh Carbutt (Collegeville, PA/Perkiomen
Valley) to push the lead to 4-0. Sophomore Sally Snover (Charlotte, NC/Myers Park) extended the cushion to
6-0 when she scorched a double down the right field line that
plated two.
Dickinson scored twice in the top of the fifth to
cut the lead to 6-2. With the bases loaded and one out,
Melissa Osborn put the ball in play and was booted
by the Shorewoman fielder which allowed two Dickinson runners to
score. Walter would retire the next two Red Devil hitters to
prevent any further damage and there would be no more scoring in
the opener.
Walter chalked up the win for WC in the circle and
improves to 5-9. She struck out four batters in going the distance,
allowed just one earned run and scattered nine hits. At the plate,
she went 2-for-3 with a run scored and an RBI. Sophomore
Jordan Tryhubenko (Cockeysville, MD/Dulaney) had
two hits and Snover registered two RBI.
For the Red Devils, Kyrie Budnik,
Emma Murtaugh and Mary Kate
Flannery all tallied two hits. In the circle Liz
Barry took the loss and falls to 3-8 as she allowed six
runs, but just two of them earned in four innings of work.
In game two, Washington grabbed a 1-0 lead in the
bottom of the first when Carbutt scored on a bunt squeeze play by
Snover with Snover beating the throw to record an RBI hit.
Dickinson would tie the contest at 1-1 in the top of the third when
Budnik singled in Jess Haklar from second
base.
In the top of the fifth, the Red Devils grabbed a
2-1 lead on a two out single by Alesha Sisco
through the left side that plated Flannery. In the top of the sixth
with two away, Budnik hit a two-run single up the middle to give
the guests a 4-1 bulge. In the bottom half of the sixth, WC had
runners at first and third with no outs and second and third with
one away, but could not score.
For Dickinson, Allison Jordan got
the complete game win and improves to 7-3. She scattered seven
hits, allowed only one unearned run and struck out 11. Budnik went
2-for-4 with three RBI in the win for the Red Devils. Sisco went
2-for-4 with an RBI, while Ari Coulter went
2-for-4 with a run scored.
Sophomore Meaghan Kimme (Lumberton, NJ/Holy
Cross) took the loss and falls to 5-6. She allowed just
two earned runs in tossing a complete game. At the dish, Snover had
two hits and WC's lone RBI in the nightcap.
The Shorewomen return to action tomorrow with a
1:00 p.m. Centennial Conference twinbill at Swarthmore.
