Box Score 2 Meaghan Kimme Throws Three-Hit Shutout in
Game Two
CHESTERTOWN, MD -- Host Washington College split a
Centennial Conference softball doubleheader against visiting
Muhlenberg College this afternoon at Washington College Softball
Field. The Shorewomen (8-10, 3-3 CC) won game two, 2-0, while the
Mules (7-10, 3-3 CC) grabbed the first game, 8-6. The shutout in
game two is Washington's first blanking of an opponent this season.
In game two with the score tied at 0-0, Washington
loaded the bases with one out. Following an infield fly out for the
second out, freshman Shaelan Nottingham (Ocean City, MD/Stephen
Decatur) hit a single through the left side to drive in freshman
Lindsey Glascock (Glenwood, MD/Glenelg) and
sophomore Leigh Carbutt (Collegeville, PA/Perkiomen Valley) to make
it 2-0. It would be the only runs scored in the nightcap.
Muhlenberg's Ashley Brewer laced a
triple down the left field line with two away in the top of the
sixth to put the tying run at the plate but sophomore pitcher
Meaghan Kimme (Lumberton, NJ/Holy Cross) got
Brittany Blohm to groundout to end the frame. The
Mules had the tying run at the plate with two out in the top of the
seventh, but Kimme got Brielle Klein to pop out in
foul territory to end the game and get the shutout.
In the circle for WC, Kimme tossed her first career
solo shutout and got the win to improve to 4-4 on the season. She
scattered three hits and struck out three. Nottingham was the only
player in game two to tally multiple hits as she went 2-for-3 with
two RBI. Carbutt was intentionally walked twice in the second game.
Brewer took the loss for the Mules in game two,
falling to 4-5. She hurled a complete game too, allowing just five
hits, two runs and punching out four.
In the opening game, the Mules jumped out to a 3-0
lead with three runs in the top of the second. Jess
Kasza led off the frame with a home run to left-center to
make it 1-0. The Mules took advantage of a WC error to add two more
runs. Elizabeth Sullivan scored on the throwing
error to make it 2-0 and Devon Barber singled in
Brielle Klein to increase the lead to 3-0.
The Shorewomen scored three runs in their half of
the second to level the game at 3-3. With two outs and the bases
loaded, Carbutt launched a bases clearing double to left-center off
the fence to tie the game at 3-3.
Muhlenberg took advantage of a Washington miscue to
score two unearned runs and take a 5-3 lead in the top of the
third. With two away, Sullivan singled to shallow left just over
the head of Washington third baseman Sally Snover
(Charlotte, NC/Myers Park) to plate two and put the guests
up for good in the opener.
The score remained the same until the seventh. In
the top of the seventh, Brewer led off the frame with a triple and
scored on a single up the middle by Blohm. Shelby
Smith ripped a double to right-center to plate two and put
Muhlenberg up 8-3 and close out the scoring in the top half of the
inning.
Washington came back with three of its own to make
it 8-6. Sophomore Jordan Tryhubenko (Cockeysville,
MD/Dulaney) singled in freshman Laura Wagoner
(Phoenixville, PA/Agnes Irwin School) to make it 8-4. The
Shorewomen made it 8-6 on a fielding error by the Mules that scored
two and cut it to 8-6. The Mules switched pitchers at this point as
Angie Sisco relived starter Alyssa
Bruckner. Sisco allowed a single to sophomore
Margaret Rohde (Highland Lakes, NJ/Academy of Home
Education) to put the winning run at the dish with one out
for WC. But Sisco got the next two batters to end the game and give
the Mules the victory in the opener.
Sullivan led the Mules offense in game one, going
3-for-4 with two RBI. Brewer was 2-for-3 with two runs scored and a
walk. Smith tallied two RBI in the win and Blohm scored twice for
Muhlenberg. In the circle, Bruckner got the win going 6.1 innings
and improves to 3-5 on the year. Sisco recorded the last two outs
to tally her first save of the season.
For Washington, Carbutt went 3-for-4 with three RBI
and a run scored in game one. Wagoner scored two runs and Rohde
pounded out two hits. Pitching wise, freshman Brittany
Walter (Forest Hill, MD/C. Milton Wright) took the loss
and falls to 3-6. She tossed a complete, allowing only four earned
runs and fanning three.
Washington returns to action this Wednesday with a
3:30 p.m. doubleheader at Ursinus in Centennial action.
