Box Score 2 Washington Sweeps Haverford for the First
Time Since 2003
CHESTERTOWN, MD -- Sophomore Leigh Carbutt
(Collegeville, PA/Perkiomen Valley) hit a walk-off two-run
home run with one out in the bottom of the seventh inning to propel
host Washington College to a 7-6 win in game two of a Centennial
Conference softball doubleheader over visiting Haverford College on
Tuesday afternoon. The Shorewomen won the opener over the Fords by
a 5-1 score. Washington is now 13-17 overall and finish the
conference slate with a 6-10 mark, while Haverford drops to 14-14
and is 6-6 in Centennial play. It is the first time that the
Shorewomen have swept the Fords since 2003.
Haverford led the second game, 4-3 entering the
bottom of the sixth when with one out, junior Becca Nicely
(Baltimore, MD/Institute of Notre Dame) launched a two-run
blast to right-center to give Washington a 5-4 lead. In the top of
the seventh, Haverford scored twice with the help of three errors
by the Shorewomen to regain the lead at 6-5. Marina
Zambrotta tied the game at 5-5 on a sacrifice fly to right
field. The Fords took a 6-5 lead when Charlotte
Bax scored on a fielding error by WC.
In the bottom of the seventh, freshman
Lindsey Glascock (Glenwood, MD/Glenelg) singled up
the middle with one away and the next batter Carbutt ended the
twinbill with her blast to right-center, the fifth time she has
gone deep this season.
The Fords scored twice in the top of the first on a
Laura Iwanyk two-run home run to right-center to
give Haverford a 2-0 lead. In the top half of the second, Cassandra
Searles scored on a fielding error by Washington to push the lead
to 3-0. The Shorewomen scored three times in the bottom of the
second without the benefit of a hit to tie the game at 3-3.
Freshman Shaelan Nottingham (Ocean City, MD/Stephen
Decatur) cut the deficit to 3-1 when she scored on a
fielding error by the Fords. Freshman Laura Wagoner
(Phoenixville, PA/Agnes Irwin School) scored on a
fielder's choice to make it 3-2 and fellow classmate
Brittany Walter (Forest Hill, MD/C. Milton Wright)
scored from third base on a throw that nailed a runner at second
base on a stolen base attempt to level the game at 3-3.
Haverford would score a run in the fifth to grab a
4-3 lead when Laina Gagliardi scored on a passed
ball.
For Washington in the nightcap, Carbutt and Nicely
each plated two runners and Nottingham scored twice. In the circle,
Walter got the win and improves to 6-10. She went the distance,
striking out a career-high eight batters and gave up only two
earned runs.
The Fords had three batters chalk up two hits in
game two with Gagliardi, Erin Delaney and
Candice Smith doing the honors. Iwanyk had two RBI
for the guests in game two. Pitching wise, Maggie
Cronin took the loss and falls to 4-3. She tossed a
complete game, giving up four earned runs and five hits.
In game one, the Shorewomen scored four runs in the
bottom of the first to seize control of the opener. With the bases
loaded and nobody out, Nottingham plated Carbutt on a bunt single
to put WC up 1-0. The hosts went up 2-0 on a bases loaded walk by
Nicely that scored sophomore Jordan Tryhubenko
(Cockeysville, MD/Dulaney). A sacrifice fly by Glascock
that chased in sophomore Sally Snover (Charlotte, NC/Myers
Park) extended the lead to 3-0 and a walk by freshman
Jory Yerkie (Worton, MD/Kent County) with the
sacks packed allowed Nottingham to cross the plate for the fourth
and final run of the frame. Washington worked out four walks in the
inning.
The Fords got their lone run of the first contest
when Iwanyk homer to right-center to lead off the top of the second
and cut the hosts' lead to 4-1. It was the first of her two home
runs on the day as she would also homer in game two. Washington
re-took a four run lead in the bottom of the fourth when Carbutt
scored on an RBI groundout off the bat of Snover for the game's
final run.
For WC in game one, Nottingham and Snover each had
two hits and an RBI in the win, while Carbutt scored twice. In the
circle, sophomore Meaghan Kimme (Lumberton, NJ/Holy
Cross) gained the win and improves to 6-7. She scattered
seven hits in hurling a complete game and allowed just one run. She
walked zero batters and fanned four.
Searles took the loss for Haverford in game one and
drops to 6-3. She went the entire way for the Fords, giving up
seven hits and four earned runs. Smith had two hits for the Fords
in game one.

Stevenson.
