Box Score Nardo Tallies Hat Trick for Shoremen in
Win
CHESTERTOWN, MD -- Freshman forward/midfielder
Chris Nardo
(Middlesex, NJ/Middlesex) scored three goals, including
one of the two that broke the Centennial Conference record for
fastest consecutive goals by the same team, as host Washington
College rolled past visiting Goucher, 5-0, in a non-conference
men's soccer game tonight on Kibler Field at Roy Kirby, Jr.
Stadium. The record was short-lived, however, as two players from
Muhlenberg scored goals 15 seconds apart in a game of their own
later in the evening.
Nardo scored his first goal just 3:17 into the game
when he lofted in a long kick off an assist from freshman
forward/midfielder Josh Goheen
(Bel Air, MD/John Carroll).
Freshman forward Sam Wild
(Chalfont, PA/Central Bucks West) buried a shot into the
lower right corner at 20:08. The Shoremen (2-3) struck again
just 17 seconds later when Wild sent a through ball to Nardo, who
ended up one-on-one with Goucher goalkeeper David
Spivey and netted his second goal of the game. The
17-second difference between the two goals broke the Centennial
Conference record of 30 seconds set by Johns Hopkins players
John Del Monaco and Peter Quin in
a game against Gettysburg in 1997.
Washington scored again for the third time in less
than two minutes when junior defender Colin
Kidwell (Potomac, MD/Winston Churchill) knocked in a
rebound at 22:00 off a shot by Goheen that caromed off the left
post.
Nardo completed his hat trick in the second half,
dribbling in wide open space and scoring from the right-side of the
box at 62:33 after receiving a pass from Wild.
Junior goalkeeper Chris Phipps
(Newark, DE/St. Mark's) made seven saves in the first half
for the Shoremen, while sophomore goalkeeper Tyler Cabot
(Hightstown, NJ/Peddie School) made five in the second
half, including a diving stop on a penalty kick. Spivey made seven
saves in the loss for the Gophers (2-4).
The Shoremen finished with a 23-21 advantage in
shots. Goucher had an 8-7 edge in corner kicks in the game.
Muhlenberg, which kicked off against Moravian at 7:00
p.m., the same time as tonight's Washington-Goucher game, saw
Nate Squire and Cody Antonini
score goals 15 seconds apart during the second half, at 60:02 and
60:17, respectively. The Mules won their game, 5-2.
The Shoremen, who had lost to the Gophers each of the
last four years, open Centennial Conference play Saturday with a
3:30 p.m. game at Dickinson.
