Box Score Smith Scores One Goal, Assists on
Another
DOVER, DE -- Visiting Washington College scored a
pair of second-half goals to defeat host Wesley College, 2-0, in a
non-conference women's soccer game tonight in Dover, DE. The
Shorewomen improved to 3-2-1 with the win, while the Wolverines
fell to 1-5-1 with the loss.
Neither team could get on the scoreboard in the first
half as the Shorewomen controlled possession and held an 8-4
advantage in shots. The Shorewomen took eight of the game's
first nine shots before the Wolverines got off the final three
shots of the period.
The Shorewomen scored at the 52:07 mark when
sophomore forward Katie Bradley (Havre de Grace,
MD/Fallston) sent a cross through the box to freshman
forward/midfielder Heather Smith (Glen Burnie, MD/Glen
Burnie), who fired the ball into the lower-right hand side
of the goal. Washington tacked on the insurance goal at 79:38 when
junior midfielder Gabby Devaud (Baltimore, MD/Institute of
Notre Dame) headed in a corner kick sent in by Smith.
Junior goalkeeper Tori Ripple (Baltimore,
MD/John Carroll) made five saves en route to the shutout
win. Sydney Kahan made six saves for Wesley. The
Shorewomen held a 15-10 advantage in shots in the game, while the
Wolverines recorded six of the game's nine corner kicks.
The victory was the first for the Shorewomen over the
Wolverines since a 2-0 win in 2002. The two teams played to a
tie in 2003 and did not play in 2004. Wesley won the 2005
game and the two teams tied in 2006 before the Wolverines ran off
three straight wins in the series beginning in 2007.
The Shorewomen return to action Saturday with a 4:00
p.m. Centennial Conference home game against Franklin &
Marshall.
