Box Score Trees Scores Two Goals, Palasik Makes Three
Defensive Saves
CHESTERTOWN, MD -- The Washington College field
hockey team scored a season-high five goals en route to a 5-1
Centennial Conference victory over visiting Swarthmore this
afternoon on Kibler Field at Roy Kirby, Jr. Stadium. The
Shorewomen improved to 5-3 overall and 3-0 in conference play with
the win, while the Garnet fell to 3-6 and 1-2.
Washington sophomore midfielder Kristen Wille
(Stevensville, MD/Kent Island) blasted in her first goal
of the year with 25:39 left in the fist half. Senior attack
Danielle Rosato (Narvon, PA/Pequea Valley) made it
2-0 when she lifted a penalty stroke into the upper-right hand
corner of the goal with 23:04 left in the half. Washington's third
goal came in transition as junior midfielder Gussie Reilly
(Buck Hill Falls, PA/Mercersburg Academy) sent the ball
ahead to junior attack Emily Trees (Kensington, MD/Connelly
School of the Holy Child). Trees then beat Swarthmore
goalkeeper Katie Ashmore, who had come up into the
circle, in a one-on-one and knocked the ball into the
goal.
The Garnet got on the scoreboard with 32:14 left in
the second half when Catie Meador scored on a
penalty stroke. Washington answered when sophomore midfielder
Hilary Manion flicked a ball to Trees for the
latter's second goal of the afternoon with 27:17 remaining.
The assist was the first of Manion's collegiate career.
Freshman midfielder Shannon Denno (Crofton, MD/South
River) tacked on the Shorewomen's fifth goal by scoring
the first of her collegiate career off an assist from Wille with
3:06 left in the game.
The Shorewomen held a 27-15 advantage in shots in the
contest, including a 16-1 advantage in the first half. Each
team had 15 penalty corners in the game.
Junior defender Brittany Palasik (Severna
Park, MD/Archbishop Spalding made three defensive saves in
the game for the Shorewomen, while senior goalkeeper
Shannon Davis (Sykesville, MD/Liberty) made six
saves in the cage. Ashmore made eight saves for
Swarthmore.
The Shorewomen return to action Sunday with a 2:00
p.m. non-conference home game against eighth-ranked Christopher
Newport.
