Box Score SALISBURY, MD -- Twentieth-ranked host Salisbury
University scored once in each half to defeat visiting Washington
College, 2-1, in non-conference men's soccer action this afternoon
in Salisbury, MD.
Salisbury (3-0-1) got on the board with its ninth
shot of the first half when Stafford Chipungu
scored off an assist from Pat Callahan at
34:29. Senior midfielder Gavin Rayburn (Bel Air,
MD/John Carroll) took the Shoremen's lone shot of the
half, which was saved by Salisbury goalkeeper Brandon
Mumby at 16:55.
The Shoremen (1-1) knotted the score at 1-1 on their
second shot of the game as freshman forward Trevor Francis
(Bel Air, MD/Calvert Hall) headed in a ball sent into the
box by sophomore midfielder Justin Geho (Westminster,
MD/Cardinal Gibbons) at 51:51. The goal by Francis was the
first of his collegiate career and was also Washington's first
against the Sea Gulls since a 3-1 loss in 1999, breaking a streak
of five straight shutouts for Salisbury over the
Shoremen.
Chipungu assisted on what would prove to be the
game-winning goal, finding Phil Bucheimer for a
shot near the top of the box at 77:43.
Washington junior goalkeeper Chris Phipps
(Newark, DE/St. Mark's) made 10 saves in the loss for the
Shoremen. Mumby made one stop for Salisbury.
The Sea Gulls enjoyed a 36-2 advantage in shots and a
5-3 edge in corner kicks in the game.
The Shoremen return to action Saturday with a 2:30
p.m. game at Randolph-Macon as part of the Randolph-Macon Select
Tournament.
