Box Score Washington Bench Supplies 50 Points in Win
CHESTERTOWN, MD -- With its reserves supplying 50 of its season-high 88 points, the Washington College men's basketball team posted an 88-79 Centennial Conference win over visiting Ursinus College tonight inside Cain Athletic Center. The Shoremen improved to 6-12 overall and 5-6 in conference play with the win, while the Bears fell to 7-11 and 4-7 with the loss.
Ursinus led by as many as nine points in the first half and held a 35-34 advantage at the intermission. The opening half saw five lead changes and three ties. The two teams combined to shoot 10-of-19 from three-point range in the half as Ursinus was 4-for-9 and Washington was 6-for-10.
The Bears held a 39-38 lead with under 19 minutes to play in the second half before the Shoremen reeled off seven straight points, capped off by a lay-up by sophomore forward Chris Soper (Poolesville, MD/Poolesville) with 16:42 to play which gave the Shoremen a 45-39 cushion. Washington would lead the rest of the way. Soper also started that seven-point stretch with a lay-up and free throw at 18:25. Washington later used a 10-3 run to build its biggest lead of the game at 76-63 on a lay-up by junior guard Kevin Breslin (Hagerstown, MD/St. Maria Goretti) with 4:29 remaining.
Breslin led the Shoremen with 19 points, a game-high nine rebounds, and four assists. Soper added a career best 13 points and brought down six boards, while junior guard Mark DeBoy (Baltimore, MD/Mount St. Joseph) netted 15 points. Soper and DeBoy led the Washington bench, which outscored its Ursinus counterpart by 41 points.
Matt Hilton led Ursinus with a game-best 23 points, while Jon Ward added 18 points and Jesse Krasna finished with 17 points, eight rebounds, and seven assists.
Both teams shot well from the field as the Bears finished at 49% and the Shoremen at 46%. Ursinus held a commanding 43-24 advantage on the boards, but committed 19 turnovers to the Shoremen's four. Washington scored 23 points off turnovers, while Ursinus scored just two.
The Shoremen return to action Saturday with a 2:00 p.m. Centennial Conference home game against McDaniel.
