Shoremen, Bears Play to 1-1 Double-Overtime Tie

Haas Scores Shoremen's Goal

CHESTERTOWN, MD -- Host Washington College played to a 1-1 double-overtime tie with visiting Ursinus College in a Centennial Conference men's soccer game this afternoon on Kibler Field at Roy Kirby, Jr. Stadium. 

A scoreless first half saw the Shoremen (3-4-2, 1-2-1 Centennial) maintain an 11-5 advantage in shots over the first 45 minutes.  The best chance for a goal in the period came when Washington freshman midfielder Sam Draper (Centreville, MD/Queen Anne's County) had a one-on-one shot and subsequent rebound shot saved by Ursinus goalkeeper Mike Alfieri in the 36th minute. 

The Shoremen had three other great chances will the game was still scoreless. Sophomore midfielder Josh Goheen (Bel Air, MD/John Carroll) just missed the far post in a one-on-one with Alfieri in 50th minute, senior forward Jordan Haas (Wyomissing, PA/Wilson) rang a shot off the post in 52nd minute, and junior defender Justin Geho (Westminster, MD/Cardinal Gibbons) hit the post in the 54th minute. Andrew Machalick converted a penalty kick to put the Bears (2-7-1, 1-2-1) on the board at 56:42. The Shoremen evened the score at 79:32 as junior defender Tim Marcin (Wilmington, DE/Concord) sent a pass ahead to Haas, who lofted it past a charging Alfieri from outside the box for a goal. In the 90th minute, Washington freshman midfielder Nick Staufenberger (Leonardtown, MD/St. Mary's Ryken) had a pair of point-blank chances stopped by Alfieri in succession as the game went to overtime. 

Ursinus held a 3-2 advantage in shots in the first overtime, but it was the Shoremen who recorded the last one of the period as freshman midfielder Matt Wilfong (Hampstead, MD/North Carroll) had a shot stopped by Alfieri in the 99th minute. A shot wide by the Bears' Ricky Griffith in the 104th minute and one high by Marcin in the 105th represented the only shots of the second overtime. 

The Shoremen held a 30-15 advantage in shots in the game, while Ursinus recorded six of the game's 10 corner kicks. Alfieri made nine saves for the Bears, while senior goalkeeper Chris Phipps (Newark, DE/St. Mark's) made seven for the Shoremen.

The Shoremen return to action Tuesday with a 7:00 p.m. home game against Catholic.
