Box Score Phipps Makes 11 Saves in Final Game, Finishes with 461 in Career
BALTIMORE, MD -- Host Johns Hopkins University clinched the top seed in the upcoming Centennial Conference Tournament with a 2-0 men's soccer win over visiting Washington College tonight on Homewood Field. The Blue Jays improved to 10-4-3 overall with the win and finish the regular season with a 7-1-1 mark in conference play. The Shoremen conclude their season with a 3-11-2 overall mark and a 1-7-1 record in conference play.
The Blue Jays scored 7:29 into the game when Rob Heuler netted goal off a loose ball in the box following a corner kick. Hopkins took the 1-0 lead into halftime, outshooting the Shoremen, 11-3, over the opening 45 minutes.
The Blue Jays doubled their lead at 66:32 when Sean Duggan assisted on a goal by Matt Carey. Hopkins totaled 14 shots in the second half to finish with a 25-6 advantage in the game. The Blue Jays also recorded all six of the game's corner kicks.
Senior goalkeeper Chris Phipps (Newark, DE/St. Mark's) made 11 saves in his final career game for the Shoremen. Phipps finishes his career with 461 career saves, second-most in school history and second-most in Centennial Conference history.
Nick Cerrone made three saves in the shutout win for the Blue Jays, who will host the semifinals and championship game of the Centennial Conference Tournament November 5th and 6th.
