Box Score Haas Scores for Shoremen, Phipps Makes 13 Saves in Loss
CHESTERTOWN, MD -- Ben Fleri scored 1:25 into overtime to give visiting Catholic University a 2-1 win over host Washington College in a non-conference men's soccer game tonight on Kibler Field at Roy Kirby, Jr. Stadium. The Cardinals improved to 7-3 with the win, while the Shoremen fell to 3-5-2 with the loss.
The Shoremen scored on their first shot of the game as senior forward Jordan Haas (Wyomissing, PA/Wilson) fired in a blast from just outside the box off a pass from freshman midfielder Matt Wilfong (Hampstead, MD/North Carroll) on a free kick at 11:58. Each team took six shots in the first half, though Catholic recorded seven of the eight corner kicks in the period.
The Cardinals held a 17-3 advantage in shots in the second half and finally found the equalizer at 80:36 when a shot by Ben Fernandez took an unusual bounce and lofted over Washington senior goalkeeper Chris Phipps (Newark, DE/St. Mark's). Phipps made 10 saves in the second half for the Shoremen, turning back several Catholic opportunities with diving saves.
Fleri scored on the only shot of overtime, converting a direct kick from just outside the box by placing the ball in the lower right-hand corner of the net.
Catholic finished the game with a 24-9 advantage in shots and a 10-4 edge in corner kicks. Phipps made 13 saves in a losing cause for the Shoremen, while Sean Libby made three in the win for the Cardinals.
Haas has now scored each of the Shoremen's past four goals, all coming in their last three games.
The Shoremen are back in action Sunday with a 1:00 p.m. Centennial Conference home game against Muhlenberg.
