Fords Too Much For Shoremen, 88-76

Four Shoremen Score In Double Figures

HAVERFORD, PA – Five Haverford players scored in double figures as host Haverford recorded an 88-76 win over visiting Washington College at Gooding Arena in Centennial Conference men's basketball action on Wednesday evening.  The Fords improve to 2-4 overall and 1-1 in Centennial play, while the Shoremen drop to 2-3 and 0-2 respectively.

In the first half, the Shoremen scored 10 straight points to take a 12-4 lead just 6:42 into the game on a jumper by senior guard Kevin Breslin (Hagerstown, MD/St. Maria Goretti).  During the run, there was a fast-break layup by junior forward Tony Hawkins (Mt. Ephraim, NJ/Haddon Township) on a full court pass from Breslin.  The Fords would respond with a 9-1 run of their own to level the game at 13-13 on a three-pointer by Geoff Hartmann.  WC ended the run on a layup by sophomore Kevin Cunningham (Mt. Laurel, NJ/Lenape) and a three-pointer by freshman guard John Weston (Atlanta, GA/Bolles School (FL) to grab an 18-13 lead with 10:51 remaining in the first half.  Haverford would counter with a 12-3 run to take a 25-21 lead on a three-pointer by Ian Goldberg with 5:35 to go in the first.  The Shoremen used a 9-2 run to reclaim the lead a 30-28 on a trifecta by senior guard Sal Schittino (Ellicott City, MD/Loyola Blakefield) with 2:43 left in the half.  Haverford would score six of the final nine points of the opening 20 minutes to take a 34-33 lead at halftime.

Both teams shot well in the first half as Haverford shot 59%, while Washington shot 57% from the floor. 

The Fords came out strong in the second half opening the second on an 11-1 run to take a 45-34 lead with 14:53 left on a layup by Goldberg.  The Shoremen would go on a 7-0 spurt of their own to cut the lead to 45-41 on a three-pointer by Schittino.  Haverford answered 12 nine unanswered points to take a 57-41 with 10:38 left in the game on a three by Hartmann.  The Fords would eventually push their to 64-47 with 9:08 remaining on a two Goldberg free throws.  Washington would go on an 8-2 run to cut the Haverford lead to 66-55 with 8:19 left on a triple by Schittino.  The Fords scored six straight points to take their third 17-point lead of the game 72-55 with 6:31 left on a Brett Cohen lay-in.  The Shoremen would cut the Fords' lead to 78-68 with 3:19 left on three free throws by Breslin. 

After Haverford converted a layup and two free throws to extend the lead to 82-68, Washington got a conventional three-point play from Breslin and a three-pointer by senior guard Mark DeBoy (Baltimore, MD/Mount St. Joseph) to cut the Haverford lead to 82-74 with 1:48 left.  Junior forward Charlie McShane (West Deptford, NJ/West Deptford) made two-of-three free throws to cut the Fords lead to 83-76 with 81 ticks left.  However, WC could not draw any closer as the Fords scored the final five points to close out the scoring.

Haverford's Cam Baker led all players with 20 points on the night, while Cohen and Goldberg added 19 points, Bo Friddell netted 13 points and Hartmann chipped in with 11 to round out the double figure scorers for the Fords.  Cohen, who shot 9-for-10 from the floor, had a game-best 13 rebounds, 12 of which came after halftime, to tally a double-double.  Friddell and Goldberg each handed out five assists to lead the Fords.  Baker, who grabbed eight boards, recorded three steals to lead all players.  Haverford turned 23 WC turnovers into 34 points.

DeBoy scored 16 points to lead the Shoremen, while Schittino added 15 points.  Breslin and Cunningham each scored 13 points to give four WC players double digits in points on the night.  Cunningham, who netted his career-high in the game, shot 6-for-7 from the field in the game.  Breslin handed out seven assists to lead all players.  The Shoremen got 26 points off the bench in the game and forced 19 Haverford turnovers, but could only turn it into 11 points. 

Haverford shot 63% from the field in the game, 50% from three-point land and 64% from the free throw line.  Washington shot 48% from the floor, 63% from behind the arc and 73% from the charity stripe.  The Shoremen hit 10 three-pointers, while the Fords connected on five from long range.  Haverford held a 34-24 edge in rebounds.

The Shoremen return to action on Saturday afternoon with a 4:00 p.m. game at Muhlenberg in Centennial Conference action.
