Washington Wins Five of Six Singles Matches
DANVILLE, VA -- The Washington College men's tennis team posted a 7-2 win over host Averett in the Shoremen's dual match season opener this afternoon in Danville, VA. Averett fell to 3-1 with the loss.
The Shoremen took two out of the three doubles points. Kiril Orlov and Iliya Egorov beat Washington junior Kyle Lisco (Toms River, NJ/Toms River North) and senior Kristian Wilson (Germantown, PA/home school), 8-1, at No. 1. The Shoremen posted a 9-8(4) win at No. 2 as junior Kevin Papen (Dover, DE/Caesar Rodney) and junior Aaron Ellison (Largo, FL/St. Petersburg) beat David Lembke and Andrey Yasyr. Washington won at No. 3 by default.
Washington won five of the six singles matches. Senior Adam Cranford (Bel Air, MD/John Carroll) posted a win over Orlov at No. 1 by retirement after each player won a set. Cranford lost the first, 6-4, but won the second, 6-3. Papen was a 6-3, 6-3, winner over Lembke at No. 2, while Ellison downed Bruno Faidutti, 6-1, 6-0, at No. 3. Yasyr got victory for Averett at No. 4, beating Lisco, 6-2, 6-2. Washington freshman Joel Novick (Cape May Court House, NJ/Middle Township) defeated Egorov, 7-5, 1-6, 10-6, at No. 5, while junior John Menzione (Chadds Ford, PA/Kennett) beat Samu Rasila, 6-1, 6-0, at No. 6
The Shoremen, ranked 12th in the Atlantic South region, return to action tomorrow with a 2:00 p.m. match at Guilford.
